Willard InterContinental Inauguratio The Willard Hotel
Willard Hotel Prepares Rooms and Amenities for Inauguration 2013
Willard InterContinental Inauguration 2013

Washington, DC, November 8, 2012 –

In anticipation of President Barack Obama’s second inauguration the Willard InterContinental hotel is in full swing preparing for the festivities. The Willard Hotel has been a prime hotel for over 150 years, due especially to key location on Pennsylvania Avenue along the parade route and between America’s two houses of power, the White House and U.S. Capitol. Rooms are selling at a four night minimum, starting at $1,149 for a Deluxe room. Suites like the Willard’s well-appointed Oval Suites with their large marble-floored entryways and based on White House Oval Office are in particular demand. These suites, priced at $5,700 per night with a four night minimum plus a $27,000 catering minimum, are perfect for a parade viewing party. For information and reservations contact Erin Mooney at 202-637-7314, or erin.mooney@ihg.com .

Inauguration at the Willard InterContinental is a very big deal. The hotel’s is busy designing its interior inaugural décor, while outside, the hotel will feature patriotic bunting and hundreds of flags fluttering on its façade. Inside, our concierge team is preparing an array of amenities to assist inauguration ball-goers in every way. These range form Lear Jet procurement to concierge’s wardrobe accoutrements and malfunction emporium, stocked with accessories from local purveyors, providing for any and all last minute wardrobe emergencies.

Each of the four nights, the Willard’s inaugural guests will receive a different amenity. They are elegant, tasty, clever, extravagant and historic, all reflecting the newly-elected president, the office of the presidency and Washington’s “other” Residence of Presidents” – the Willard. Some amenities from President Obama’s 2009 inaugural included:

  •   Silver American Flag Pins from Tiffany & Company
  •   Handcrafted and numbered Retro DC picture frames from Keith Lipert Gallery
  •   Washington Post commemorative election night edition
  •   Pick-up Sticks – Picking up the pieces for a strong economy
  •   White Chocolate White Houses
  •   Chicago-manufactured candies and Obama Candy Bars
  •   Chicago Popcorn in a Willard Tin
  •   Red Door Spa Robe
  •   Classic Coke Inaugural edition bottles

While the 2013 inaugural amenities are still being decided, they will have a Sustainably-Made in America theme, to include chocolates by Tumbador, a Brooklyn, New York chocolate factory that employs many people who are given a second chance through community based programs.

A visit to the Willard history gallery gives an inspiring overview of inaugural history featuring pictures of inaugural events which passed by the Willard’s door from 1850 to the present. Most famously, President Lincoln, his family and aides stayed here prior to his inauguration in 1860, and his inaugural luncheon was held (menu: Corned Beef and Cabbage, Mock Turtle Soup, Parsley Potatoes and Blackberry Pie.) Lincoln's first presidential pay check went to paying his bill at the Willard - a copy from the Library of Congress of the $773.75 bill is on display in the gallery.

The Willard InterContinental is located in the heart of the nation's capital on Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House, the Smithsonian museums and the downtown business and theatre districts. The Willard epitomizes world-class hospitality as the hotel of choice for heads of state and leaders of the world's business, cultural, social and political elite. The hotel's 335 well appointed guestrooms include 41 elegant suites. Dining options include Café du Parc, the popular French bistro with seasonal outdoor seating, the Occidental Grill & Seafood, traditional Afternoon Tea in Peacock Alley and the classic Round Robin Bar. The luxurious Red Door Spa offers a wide array of pampering treatments. An American institution, the Willard has hosted nearly every U.S. president since 1853. It was at the Willard that Julia Ward Howe wrote The Battle Hymn of the Republic, where President Ulysses S. Grant popularized the term “Lobbyist,” and where Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King finished his renowned "I Have a Dream" speech. The Willard is also noted for its 100% wind power, recycling and charitable initiatives including Anacostia River clean-up, the hotel’s “Adoption” of a Pershing Park, and support of a school prom for disabled youth. The classic Willard InterContinental combines heritage and luxury with contemporary comfort and the latest technology. In 1852, Henry Willard wrote to his brother Joseph convinced that if he could get soon-to-be president Franklin Pierce as a guest at his hotel, a precedent would be set forever labeling the Willard as a hotel of presidents. Pierce did stay at the Willard and almost every president since has been a guest; many using the hotel as a residence, others as a launching pad for inaugural parades and the rest as honored attendees at grand receptions.

Presidents Taylor, Fillmore, Pierce, Lincoln, Buchanan, Roosevelt, Harding and Coolidge, among others, were guests at the Willard prior to their inauguration, proceeding from the hotel to take their oath of office.

President Lincoln’s Inaugural The Willard history gallery features many pictures of inaugural events which passed by our door. Most famously, President Lincoln, his family and aides stayed here prior to his inauguration and his inaugural luncheon was held at the Willard.  The menu was comprised of Corned Beef and Cabbage, Mock Turtle Soup, Parsley Potatoes and Blackberry Pie.

Lincoln's first presidential pay check went to paying his bill at the Willard - a facsimile from the Library of Congress of the $773.75 bill is on display in the gallery.

The Willard was bursting at the seams on the eve of Lincoln’s first inauguration. Visitors were packed ten and more to a room. Harper’s Weekly described one scene:

“Four bearded and otherwise long-haired individuals of the masculine gender are deposited on a bed which is hardly big enough to hold Tom Thumb and his wife. These individuals are fast asleep, and evidently snoring; four lads are placed in the middle of the bed and they lie in pairs…and on the left lie two more fat gentlemen, dead asleep on their backs, with their knees up, and their noses pointed thankfully to the ceiling…No one would have believed that such a scene could have existed in the aristocratic hotel of the generous Mr. Willard…”

Franklin Pierce finished his oath of office and was beginning his speech when it began to snow.  Canceling plans for a parade back to the White House, Pierce dropped ex-President Millard Fillmore and his wife off at The Willard, and then continued on to the executive mansion.

The presidential flag flew in front of the Willard in 1923 when Calvin Coolidge used the hotel as the official presidential residence for nearly a month while waiting for Warren Harding’s family to vacate the White House after his sudden death. Coolidge’s initial oath of office was taken while visiting in Vermont; it was then repeated in Washington, in his apartment at the Willard Hotel. The presidential flag flew for a month in front of the Willard, where he conducted affairs of state pending Mrs. Harding's departure from the White House.  Coolidge’s Inauguration Parade drew thousands of onlookers outside the Willard’s Pennsylvania Avenue entrance.

WASHINGTON, June 5, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Former Presidential Candidate Gary Bauer congratulated Governor Scott Walker for his win in Wisconsin's recall election, calling it "another sign that taxpayers will award office holders ready to do the hard work of reigning in out-of-control government spending."

Bauer, the chairman of the Campaign for Working Families,  made the following statement:

"I congratulate Governor Scott Walker for his hard-fought victory tonight, and most especially for having the courage of his convictions to fight the good fight. But the victory in Wisconsin is not Scott Walker's alone.  It is a victory for the hard-working taxpayers of Wisconsin, who foot the bill year after year.  It is a victory for common sense over powerful special interests.  It is a victory that taxpayers in every state can celebrate.  It is a victory, yes, even for some union members.

"Since Gov. Walker's reforms were enacted, tens of thousands of state employees have opted to keep more of the money they earn rather than let the public employees union siphon off their hard-earned dollars.  In other words, once given the choice, more than half of the public employees union's members decided that they didn't need the union.  These reforms will pay real dividends for the taxpayers of Wisconsin.  They are the real winners tonight.

"The recall election is a sign of good things to come.  The power of the Big Labor bosses has finally been checked, not just in Wisconsin, but also in scores of other states across the country.  More governors, legislators and taxpayers will be inspired to stand up against the liberal labor unions and do what is truly in the best interests of their communities.  Wisconsin's 10 Electoral College votes are now in play, and the anti-tax, small government movement that swept the country in 2010 is about to sweep Barack Obama out of office in 154 days!"
