2016 U.S. Senate: Sen. Brian Schatz (D) easily won his bid for a full term; he defeated John Carroll (R) by 306,604 votes (70.1%) to 92,653 votes (21.2%) and 9,103 (2.1%) for Joy J. Allison (C), 6,809 (1.6%) for Michael Kokoski (L), and 1,393 (0.3%) for Raghu Giuffre (ASP).
U.S. House: Rep. Mark Takai (D) died of pancreatic cancer on July 20, 2016.  A special election  was held on Nov. 8.  Former U.S. Rep. Coleen Hanbusa (D) won both the contest to fill the vacancy and the general election by wide margins.
State Legislature: 14 of 25 Senate seats and 51 House seats were up; Democrats maintained dominance in both chambers.  The one Republican in the state Senate, Sam Slom (Dist. 9), lost, moving the balance from 24D, 1R to 25D, 0R.  In the House Democrats picked up a seat, going from 44D, 7R to 45D, 6R.
