Overview: Utah has been a solidly Republican state and has not gone Democratic since LBJ ran in 1964.  However, Donald Trump was not popular in this conservative state, and an interesting four-way race developed.  On Aug. 23 the Clinton campaign opened a field office in Salt Lake City, and in the latter part of October it added paid staffers.1  Independent candidate Evan McMullin had his national headquarters in Salt Lake City and made Utah the central focus of his campaign.  Libertarian nominee former Gov. Gary Johnson also had his national headquarters here.
Neither of the Democratic candidates visited.  Mike Pence did events in Salt Lake City on Sept. 1 and a rally in Salt Lake City on Oct. 26.  Donald Trump Jr. did a fundraiser in Salt Lake City on Sept. 21.  Johnson and Weld rallied at University of Utah in Salt Lake City on Aug. 6, and Johnson rallied at American International School of Utah in Murray on the evening of Nov. 1.  McMullin visits started with his launch event on Aug. 10 in Salt Lake City and continued to a Nov. 5 town hall at Dixie Convention Center in St. George, an election eve (Nov. 7) rally with Mindy Finn at the Utah Valley Convention Center in Provo, and his Election Night party in Salt Lake City.
Trump obtained less than half of the vote but prevailed by a margin of 204,555 votes (18.08 percentage points) over Clinton.  Clinton's 27.46% was her third worst showing after Wyoming and West Virginia; the best showing by any statewide Democratic candidate in Utah was just 31.7%

2012 Overview
Strongly conservative Utah, headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church), threw solid support behind Mitt Romney, providing him with a plurality of 488,787 votes (48.04 percentage points--his widest percentage margin of any state).  Romney also gained a boost from Utah volunteers mobilized to help in battleground states, particularly Nevada, and from $9.2 million in contributions (FEC).  There were a few visits: Romney (June 8; major donor retreat June 22-24; Sept. 18), Ryan (Sept. 5) and Biden (July 10-11).  Utah is also the base of Justice Party presidential candidate Rocky Anderson, the former mayor of Salt Lake City, and the headquarters of former Gov. Gary Johnson's campaign.
