- The Open Seat Contests
Open seats sometimes offer pick-up possibilities. On Nov. 2, 2010, there were 43 open seats. 9R and 12D retired outright. 13R and 9D ran for another office (1D and 1R subsequently filled by special elections). 2D and 2R lost in the primaries. Compare: 2008, 2006. These included some of the most competitive and some of the most non-competive contests. 23 were held by Republicans and 20 by Democrats; Democrats held on to just seven of those seats.
