Early Campaign Videos (January-June 2011)

Before the ad wars started campaigns and exploratory committees produced plenty of web videos to spread the candidates' messages.  The purposes and styles of these videos varied widely.  Among the most interesting are launch videos in which a candidate introduces himself or herself and sets out a rationale for his or her candidacy.  These hark back to the days when campaigns distributed videocasettes.  Other videos tie in with fundraising efforts.  Videos from the Pawlenty camp were notable for rather over-the-top swelling music and frenetic edits, likely an attempt to compensate for what some saw as the candidate's bland persona.  The Huntsman campaign and Fred Davis did some interesting artistic videos based on Huntsman riding a motorcycle through some very scenic Utah countryside; these were also notable for a "bullet point" style of narration which strung a lot of key words together but did have its limitations.  At least in this early phase, the Huntsman campaign seemed to place the most emphasis on videos.  On launch their website included a passel of issue videos, with Huntsman talking directly to the camera on a number of topics; this was not seen on other sites.  Huntsman's campaign also started out posting some brief, less than 30-second "Daily Videos."  Romney's team produced some fairly classy "On the Trail" videos, as well as some more pointed "Bump in the Road" videos.  Roemer and Johnson, excluded from debates, used videos to present their responses.  The Obama re-election campaign produced a couple of videos featuring top staffers and PowerPoint (R) presentations that convey a sense of a behind-the-scenes look at the campaign.  Finally, although he ended up not being a candidate, Donald Trump had some very effective videos of himself talking to the camera for several minutes on topics of the day.
