"Obama Misery Index: Ryan's Story"
+
2:07 web video from June 24, 2011.
[Music]
Obama (clip from Aug. 8, 2008
Convention speech in Denver): “We
Democrats have a very different measure of what constitutes progress in
this country. We measure progress by how many people can find a job
that pays the mortgage. Whether you can put a little extra money away
at the end of each month so you can someday watch your child receive
her college diploma.”
Text: Three
years later.
Ryan
King
(Midland,
MI,
June 9, 2011): “Frustration is
the big
word. Anything that I’m qualified for, you know, that people are
looking for, they also want experience. And, I mean, you know, because
of the economy, and the way it is, you know, there are so many people
that are looking for jobs, you know, at the same time, my hands are
tied. How can I get experience if no one’s going to hire me in?”
“It's Ryan King. I was born and raised in Deford, Michigan. Just graduated college with my bachelor’s degree in business administration. Am I struggling right now? Absolutely. You know, I buy bologna and bread commonly because it’s cheap. It’s what I eat. You know, it’s just kind of, it’s, you know, like right now I probably have about three dollars to my name before I cash my paycheck tomorrow. So, it does get rough. What is wrong with me? You know, is it my fault that I can’t get a job? You know, what can I do differently? To a certain point, you just start losing faith in yourself. It’s scary because a lot of my generation, you know, like my roommate who just graduated with me, you know, he’s at home, jobless, hasn’t found anything here in Michigan.”
“I mean you went through
Detroit, you went and saw where Chrysler and, you know, GM and all
those places used to be. Bay City, they shut down GM plant essentially.
Really never much going on there. I haven’t seen the U.S. go ‘Alright,
we’re kind of failing here. You know, we’re not doing so well. What can
we do to make it better? What can we do to fix it?’ You know, when
we’re finally able to say ‘We’re finally improving upon ourself’
because I don’t think we’ve been able to say that for a long time.
"No matter what I will somehow make it. I can’t promise how it’s going to be but, it doesn’t matter, I’ll make it somehow.”
Notes: According to the campaign, "The
video highlights President
Obama’s failure to create jobs, especially for a new generation of
Americans just entering the workforce." The video is certainly
downbeat, but shouldn't it also present some solutions?
Coinciding with release
of the video, the campaign was running blog ads with an "Obama isn't
working" theme.
