Obama for America

"Katherine Archuleta - 'Why I'm Here'" +
  1:50 web video from May 15, 2012.

[Music] Katherine Archuleta, National Political Director: The Affordable Care Act is deeply personal to me.  My daughter is my most precious, precious gift, and the fact that my president has protected her for the rest of her life, I will be grateful for the rest of my life.

My name is Katherine Archuleta; I'm President Obama's national political director.

At 19 my daughter was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and she required immediate surgery.  It was a scary moment for us.

I remember when the doctor showed us that the mass had been successfully removed.  My daughter looked up at her and said, does this mean that I'm a cancer survivor?  And the doctor looked at her and said, yes, you're a cancer survivor.

As a cancer survivor, it's really important that you have health care.  At 21 our daughter would have been kicked off of our insurance policy, and worse than that she had a pre-existing condition.

When the Affordable Care Act passed, there was this sort of lump in my throat that said, this is for me, this is for us, this is for my family, this is for my daughter.

Because of the Affordable Care Act, my daughter is able to stay on our insurance until she's 26, and no one will be able to discriminate against her because she's a cancer survivor.

President Obama passed the Affordable Care Act, and saved my daughter's life.  That's why I'm here.
