3:04 web video from May 26, 2012.
TEXT: Three years ago today
[Music] Obama: After completing this exhaustive process I have decided to nominate an inspiring woman who I believe will make a great justice, Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the great state of New York.
Alida:
As
a
woman, a Latina lawyer, that meant all the world to me.
Andrea
(in Spanish): I actually remember the speech, and the things
that were said, and I have listened to that speech several times, and
it really is one of the reasons why I am working for the campaign.
Alida:
You
internally
put sort of limits on your own capabilities because you
don't see a lot of yourself within the profession. That day I
just remember bawling my eyes out watching the president nominate her,
and I just felt like my glass ceiling just shattered.
Andrea
(in Spanish): The history of Judge Sotomayor is a Latino
story really. She was raised in a very modest way and triumphed
because of her studies and also because she had the support of her
family and her community.
Alida:
The
pride
wasn't just in the glass ceiling shattering, it was in
knowing that she had done everything she needed to do to earn that
jobxxthat she worked hard, went to amazing schools and had the most
experience.
Obama:
Even
as
she has accomplished so much in her life, she has never
forgotten where she began, never lost touch with the community that
supported her...
Elis (in
Spanish): It's very important to have a Latina in the Supreme
Court for me and for my family because it feels like the first time
that we have a voice there.
Rachel:
As
a
Puerto Rican woman myself, it was a very proud moment for me, but
when I think about my daughter, who's 2 1/2 years old, it means that no
dream is too big for her to dream.
Obama:
When
Sonia
Sotomayor ascends those marble steps to assume her seat on
the highest court in the land, America will have taken another
important step towards realizing the ideal that is etched above its
entrance: Equal justice under the law.
Elis (in
Spanish): I am dedicated to President Obama's campaign because
with the example of choosing Sotomayor to the Supreme Court I know that
he is also dedicated to the same values that we have in our community.
Alida:
It
started
with the nomination of Judge Sotomayor, but he has delivered
consistently for the community, and there's really frankly too much at
stake, and so that's why I'm here, that's why I'm working hard every
single day.
Andrea
(in Spanish): The nomination of Judge Sotomayor really joined us
all as a Hispanic community throughout the country.
Alida:
There's
nothing
that matters more for our community right now than
re-electing President Obama.
Andrea
(in Spanish): For that reason we are united for President
Obama's campaign.
