Obama: If you’ve been
successful, you didn’t get there on your own.
If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.
TEXT: Jack Gilchrist, Owner
Gilchrist Metal Fabricating Company
My
father’s hands didn’t build this company? My hands didn’t build this
company? Through hard work and a little bit of luck, we built this
business. Why are you demonizing us for it? It’s time we had
somebody
who believes in us, someone who believes that achievement should be
rewarded, not punished. We need somebody who believes in America.
Romney (voiceover): I’m
Mitt Romney and I
approve this message.
Notes:
According to the press release, "Small businesses are the lifeblood of
our economy. But President
Obama’s comments last week show that he just doesn’t understand who the
real job creators are. How
can
he
help
small
businesses when he doesn’t even recognize their
value?"

web video. The Romney campaign hammered away at
this quote
relentlessly for days. (For example on July 25 the campaign
organized 24 "We Did Build This" events in
key states). Part of the Obama campaign's response was the ad "Always" (July
24).
