TAMPA, Fla. – Tampa, Fla. native Holly McGovern Barber has been named director of community outreach/special events for the 2012 Republican National Convention to be held in Tampa, Fla., August 27-30.
Barber’s background in conventions began in the communications department for the Republican National Convention in New Orleans, La. in 1988. In 1989 she transitioned to the International Republican Institute (IRI) as the director of public affairs and special events. During her tenure at IRI, she also served as deputy director of the international program at the 1992 Republican National Convention.
Since moving to Tampa in 1997 with her family, Barber has been an active volunteer and successfully chaired several area fundraisers.
“I am delighted to be a part of the 2012 Republican National Convention, especially since it is being hosted in a location I hold near and dear. Working with the Tampa Bay area will be essential in our executing a successful event this August,” she said.
Chairman Alec Poitevint is equally happy to have Barber on board.
“I have worked with [Barber] in the past and know she will represent the convention in a positive manner within the Tampa Bay area. Her connections will ensure this convention is in step with our gracious hosts until it is finished,” he said.
Barber also promotes volunteerism among the convention team members. She organizes monthly trips to various area charities to give back to the community by helping those in need.
