Officials at Wake Forest learned April 1 that the university is one of 12 applicants to host one of the debates to be sponsored and produced in 2012 by the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD). The CPD announced the applicants after the deadline passed last week for submitting an application.
Wake Forest is the only North Carolina applicant. The CPD posted the complete list of applicants on its website at www.debates.org. All are colleges and universities.
The university served as the site for presidential debates in 2000 and 1988. In 2008, Wake Forest served as a potential alternate site for a CPD debate, but all debates were held as scheduled at selected sites that year.
The CPD held three presidential and one vice presidential debate in 2008.
Wake Forest proposes that a debate be held in 2012 in the university’s Wait Chapel, where presidential debates were held in 2000 between George W. Bush and Al Gore and in 1988 between George Bush and Michael Dukakis.
The university expects to learn next fall if the CPD has chosen it to be a debate site.
