Statement
by Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, Executive Director and Co-Founder,
MomsRising on the Re-election of President Barack Obama:
“Today
we congratulate President Obama on his re-election. We’re ready to move
forward with him to ensure that we close the gender wage gap, to see
health care reform fully implemented so that all our families get the
health care they need, and to secure earned sick days for all workers,
“Moms
had a great deal at stake in this election and they voted their
interests. Access to affordable quality health care, fair pay, and
earned sick leave, are just a few of the issues moms care about, and
that they voted on in 2012.
“From making the Lilly Ledbetter
Fair Pay Restoration Act the first bill he signed into law as
president, to his historic achievement of implementing health care
reform, President Obama has stood up for women, moms and their families
and in this election, we stood up for him.
“MomsRising worked
hard this year to encourage moms to get out and vote. MomsRising
registered people to vote across the nation, educated people about the
issues through online and on-the-ground interactive formats, ran a
'Pledge to Vote' program, conducted a virtual phone bank through which
moms across the country reached out to other moms to remind them to
vote on Election Day, shared a texting platform to help people find
their polling places, and more. Hundreds of mom volunteers have been
calling to remind other moms to vote whenever they could – after
dinner, during kids’ naps and playtime, during a lunch break – to get
out the mom vote.”
MomsRising.org is
an online and on-the-ground grassroots organization of more than a
million people who are working to achieve economic security for all
families in the United States. MomsRising is working for paid family
leave, flexible work options, affordable childcare, and for an end to
the wage and hiring discrimination, which penalizes so many
others.
MomsRising also advocates for health care for all, toxic-free
environments, and breastfeeding rights so that all children can have a
healthy start. Established in 2006, MomsRising and its members are
organizing and speaking out to improve public policy and to change the
national dialogue on issues that are critically important to America’s
families. In 2012, Forbes.com named MomsRising’s web site as one of the
Top 100 Websites For Women for the third year in a row.
