Middle Class Mitt

Will Mitt Romney play the middle class card in Florida tonight?  He has in his previous Florida visits.

Though Mitt Romney has a net worth of up to $250 million, he considers himself a member of “the great middle class — the 80 to 90 percent of us in this country.”

Yesterday in Florida, Romney called for a tax policy to help “us” in the middle class.

Earlier this year – also in Florida – Mr. Romney told an out-of-work voter, “I’m also unemployed.”

Hundreds of millions in the bank. Beach and lake houses around the country. A successful career acquiring and dismantling companies and jobs.

Will Middle Class Mitt again grace the stage in the Sunshine State?

ROMNEY ISSUES SIX QUESTIONS TO RICK PERRY ABOUT HIS SOCIAL SECURITY PROPOSAL

BOSTON, MA – In advance of Thursday’s debate in Orlando, the Romney for President campaign released a series of questions for Governor Rick Perry about his proposal to “let the states [decide] how to run the pensions.” Questions about Perry’s proposal to return Social Security to the states have so far gone unanswered.

“This election is about choices and voters – and voters will have the opportunity to choose between Mitt Romney, who wants to fix and strengthen Social Security for the next generation, and Rick Perry, who wants to dismantle it. Voters are now learning more about Rick Perry’s position on Social Security and find it troubling that he has refused to answer questions on what the Social Security program would look like at the state level, as Rick Perry suggests. Governor Perry has the opportunity to clarify his proposal while he is in Florida – a state with an extraordinarily high number of retirees and near retirees,” said Gail Gitcho, Romney Communications Director.

Six Questions for Rick Perry on Returning Social Security to the States

  1. Constitutionality: Perry has asserted that a federally run Social Security program is unconstitutional.  If this remains his position, it suggests that the program must be devolved to the states notwithstanding the advisability of such an approach. The first question in understanding Perry’s approach must be whether he believes there is no choice but to devolve or, alternatively, if he believes it is the right policy solution.

  1. Unfunded Liabilities: Devolving the program to the states does not address underlying fiscal challenges. Where a single program once faced possible insolvency, there would now be fifty. How would Perry suggest a state such as Texas address this challenge? Should it raise taxes, reduce benefits, or pursue other types of reform?

  1. Trust Fund Accounting: What would happen to the Trust Fund that accrued while the system was in surplus? Interest payments from the fund and draw-down on the principal are crucial funding streams for the national system that are unavailable to the states. How would those funds be equitably allocated to the states?

  1. Mobility: How would a state-by-state system accommodate the enormous number of Americans who move across state lines during their lives, and especially as retirement nears? Would each state be responsible for supporting its current disabled and elderly population on its current payroll? Would funds paid into the system in one state follow a resident to another state later in life?

  1. State Obligations: Would states be free to forego a pension program altogether? If so, what if any provision would be made for the disabled and elderly in that state? Or would they be expected to move to other states with more generous benefits, inevitably overwhelming those systems?

  1. Administration: Would individuals retain national Social Security numbers or would each state administer its own system? Would individuals have any guarantee that commitments made during their working life are honored in retirement? Who would pay for the added expense associated with administering fifty programs instead of one?

FLORIDA OFFICIALS QUESTION RICK PERRY’S SOCIAL SECURITY PROPOSAL AHEAD OF DEBATE

Boston, MA – Ahead of Thursday’s debate in Orlando, Florida elected officials have asked questions about Rick Perry’s proposal to send Social Security back to the states.

Congressman Connie Mack (FL-14): “Rick Perry has said that he wants Social Security to go back to the states. Given the challenging budgetary situation many states are already in, his plan could put retirees and near-retirees in an even more precarious position. Would states like Florida have to choose between honoring our promises to seniors and paying for education and public safety?”

Congressman Tom Rooney (FL-16): “Social Security is a contract the American people have made with the federal government. The federal government needs to honor this contract.”

State Senator John Thrasher (District 8): “We live in a mobile world. People are constantly moving from state to state. Does Rick Perry think it will be feasible for someone to expect to receive all their benefits when they have lived in many states over their lifetime?”

State Senator Anitere Flores (District 38): “Rick Perry is out of touch with the views of Floridians today. Dismantling Social Security would create uncertainty for our retirees and those near retirement. If Florida faces a budget shortfall, will seniors fail to receive the Social Security benefits they have earned?”

DNC ISSUES SIX QUESTIONS TO MITT ROMNEY ABOUT HIS SOCIAL SECURITY PROPOSAL

Six Questions for Mitt Romney on his Plan to Privatize Social Security:

1.       You support privatizing Social Security which would undermine the program for seniors and dismantle it for future generations.  Why then should people not find your attacks on others on the issue completely hypocritical? [Economic Policy Institute, 6/1/01]

2.      As President Bush was forced to admit in 2005, privatizing Social Security does nothing to address it’s solvency – in fact it blows up to a $2 trillion hole in the trust fund to transition to private accounts.  What then would you do to address Social Security’s long term financing which would be made worse by siphoning up to $2 trillion from the trust fund to fund for your privatization scheme? [USA Today, 3/16/05; Bloomberg Businessweek, 1/24/05]

3.      You praised President Bush’s effort to privatize Social Security and said that Social Security surpluses should be invested in the stock market.  If President Bush’s privatization scheme had become law, what would you have told seniors in the fall 2008 when the floor fell out from under the economy and stock market went spiraling down? [Center for American Progress, October 2008]

4.      In attacking your rivals on this issue you claim to want to “strengthen” Social Security.  The Century Foundation found that privatizing Social Security would slash benefits by 44 percent.  How does slashing benefits by nearly half “strengthen” a program the purpose of which is to provide a defined benefit to seniors? [The Century Foundation, 3/9/05]

5.      You’ve rejected the term privatization but embraced the very scheme – diverting Social Security revenues to risky investments.  Why don’t you come clean and admit that you want to gamble with Social Security in a volatile stock market? [Think Progress, 9/8/11]

6.      You’ve criticized Rick Perry for the suggestion that Social Security be turned over to the states.  But you want to turn the program over to Wall Street whose risk taking nearly sank our economy and wiped out trillions of dollars in net worth for Americans.  Why should retirees on a fixed income trust Wall Street with their only source of income and retirement security? [Center for American Progress, October 2008]

Re: A Preview of Tonight’s Republican Debate, GOP Weekend Events in Florida

As the Republican candidates for president meet tonight in Orlando for their next debate, the American people can expect to see another right-wing variety show – with the entire GOP field saying literally anything they think the Tea Party will want to hear. What you will not hear them talk about, and what they refused to talk about for the previous five debates, is a single new idea or proposal that will create jobs in Florida or around the country or help middle-class Americans get back on their feet.

Tonight’s debate will confirm that the Republican candidates have no vision for moving our country forward. Instead, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney, and the other Republican candidates want to deliver more of the same failed policies of the past that the Tea Party is demanding and that Washington Republicans are pursuing – policies that would dismantle Social Security, end Medicare as we know it, and offer more handouts and tax cuts to corporations, special interests and the very wealthiest few at the expense of seniors and middle-class Americans.

The GOP presidential candidates will likely double down on their support for repealing protections that were put in place to defend consumers and prevent a repeat of the financial crisis – they want to give more to the wealthiest and biggest corporations, and go back to letting Wall Street and the insurance companies write their own rules. We all saw how that turned out. These policies led to the financial crisis and the recession we’re still recovering from.

These policies are wrong for Florida’s seniors and middle-class families, and they are wrong for the country. During tonight’s debate, and while the Republican candidates set up shop in Florida this weekend for the Republican Party’s Presidency 5 straw poll and the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Orlando, we’ll see Romney, Perry and the rest of the GOP field seek to win their party’s nomination by desperately courting the far-right Tea Party and its ideology that would hurt middle class Americans.

Romney and Perry: Leading the Pack on Destroying Social Security, Medicare

During the last debate, GOP frontrunners Mitt Romney and Rick Perry took turns trading shots on Social Security and a whole host of issues. The reality is that when it comes to their plans for Social Security and Medicare, which millions of seniors rely on to make ends meet, Romney and Perry are equally wrong. They both seek to eliminate Social Security as it currently exists, threatening to dismantle it entirely or gamble with the program’s funds in the stock market – a scheme that would devastate Social Security and put seniors at risk, especially during rocky economic times. And Romney and Perry have also both expressed their support for the Republican budget plan which passed the House that would end Medicare as we know it.

On Social Security, no matter how you slice it – from the rhetoric of one candidate to the stated position of another – Republicans would undermine economic security for seniors. If Mitt Romney, Rick Perry, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich or the rest of the field had their way and President Bush had been successful in privatizing Social Security, the consequences for our country would have been disastrous:

  • During President Bush’s attempt to privatize Social Security in 2005, the Campaign for America’s Future issued a report estimating that “a typical 20-year-old worker, who has just begun paying into the Social Security system, can expect to see a cut of $152,000 over their retirement.” [Campaign for America's Future, 3/1/05]
  • Gary Thayer, Chief Economist for A.G. Edwards, predicted that President Bush’s privatization plan would have added between $1 trillion to $2 trillion to our national deficit. [MSNBC, 12/28/04]
  • The Washington Post reported that privatization would have accounted for the loss of “more than $700 billion of Social Security tax revenues” to pay for private accounts over the first seven years. [Washington Post, 2/8/06]

The American people soundly rejected this dangerous plan, and yet Mitt Romney has been touting the benefits of Social Security privatization for years. What Romney and Perry do not understand is that Social Security, like Medicare, is something Americans have earned through their own hard work – it’s not a handout, but rather something Americans have paid for throughout their careers and are counting on in their retirement. Florida’s seniors are certainly counting on it, but Romney, Perry and the rest of the Republican candidates aren’t listening to them. They are too busy taking their cues from the Tea Party and Congressional Republicans and threatening to shatter a decades-long compact with the American people.

Republicans Have No Plan for Job Creation or Economic Recovery

During tonight’s debate, you will not hear a single Republican candidate offer a real plan for creating jobs or building our economic recovery. All you will hear are the same tired economic policies that failed us in the Bush years, which Congressional Republicans have continued to pursue and which the Tea Party would double down on. Such policies have and once again, would hurt our country and help millionaires, billionaires, and special interests at the expense of middle class families, seniors, and students.

While the President has proposed a plan, the American Jobs Act, that would get more Americans back to work and put more money back into the pockets of middle class families and small businesses, Republicans are playing from the same playbook they always do: shower the most fortunate with tax giveaways, slash critical initiatives for seniors, students and the middle class to the bone and all will be well. Such an approach has failed Americans and our economy over and over and over again – yet Republicans continue to cling to the belief that if they just try it all again – this time it will work. It won’t – and the American people know it.

That’s why repeatedly – in poll after poll – Americans express support for the President’s balanced approach to job growth and deficit reduction.

According to the most recentCBS News/New York Timespoll, 71 percent of Americans support reducing the deficit through both spending cuts and tax increases. Only 21 percent support reducing the deficit through spending cuts only. Among independents, 70 percent support raising taxes and cutting spending, compared to just 19 percent who support only spending cuts.

An AugustNBC News/Wall Street Journalpoll found that 56 percent of Americans thought that reducing the deficit by cutting spending and increasing taxes was totally or mostly acceptable. In contrast, 60 percent of Americans believed that cutting spending without an increase in taxes—including on corporations or the wealthy—was mostly or totally unacceptable.

And, a USA Today/Gallup poll following the debt ceiling agreement found that the GOP candidates are on the wrong side of the American people both on how to reduce the deficit and deal with Social Security and Medicare. That poll found thatincreasing revenues garners the most support of five possible ways to reduce our debt. Sixty-six percent of Americans—including 45 percent of Republicans and 64 percent of independents—support increasing income taxes for the wealthiest Americans in order to reduce the debt. Sixty percent of Americans—including 51 percent of Republicans and 60 percent of independents—support increasing tax revenues by making major changes to the federal tax code. Compare that to the42 percent of Americanswho favor making significant changes to Social Security and Medicare to reduce their costs.

But perhaps no one should be surprised at how out of step Republican presidential candidates are on the issue of dealing with America’s fiscal situation and jobs. After all – they have all raised their right hands in recent debates to declare they would reject even a 10 to 1 spending cuts to revenue deal to balance the budget.

Conclusion

Unlike the President, who is actively working to move forward with an economic vision and jobs plan that will put our country back on track, the Republican candidates in tonight’s debate will continue to appease the increasingly influential Tea Party, which has been afforded more and more power by Congressional Republicans. Their ideas are non-existent, and we know exactly what direction they will take Florida or our country in – we saw it for eight straight years before President Obama took office, and it brought our nation to the brink of disaster. Our nation simply cannot afford what Republicans will be offering in Orlando tonight.

Presidential Candidate Buddy Roemer Responds to Being Excluded from the Fox News Debate

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Republican businessman and former Louisiana Governor Buddy Roemer today released the following statement in response to being excluded from tomorrow night's debate hosted by Fox News and Google.

"After proudly gaining my 1% in the latest FOX News poll, having started with zero name recognition, I must again ask – why am I being excluded from tomorrow’s debate? Even when I garner the required 1% needed to qualify, FOX News has decided to exclude me. Once again, the American people will not get to hear a voice that fights against the special-interests that create corporate tax-loopholes and ship our good jobs overseas. Unfair trade practices and the corrupting influence of money in politics will again not be part of the debate."

"I am the only candidate who has been a congressman and a governor, but apparently that is not good enough for the debate sponsors. The American people are hungry for this voice."

GARY JOHNSON ON FOX NEWS DEBATE INVITATION

September 21, 2011, Santa Fe, NM -- Presidential Candidate Gary Johnson released the following statement after receiving confirmation that he will be allowed to participate in Thursday night’s Fox News / Google debate:

"We are obviously very pleased to have this opportunity to participate. I am bringing forward a voice to the debate that has gone largely unheard thus far and I am convinced that a lot of voters are ready to listen. I’m promising to submit a balanced budget in 2013 and I am further pledging to veto any spending legislation that exceeds revenue."

As Governor of New Mexico Johnson vetoed 750 bills and thousands of line items, and kept his pledge to never raise taxes. Johnson's stewardship has made him very popular in his home state where Democrats outnumber Republicans by 2 to 1.

Late yesterday evening, Governor Johnson received official confirmation that he will be included in this Thursday’s Fox News GOP Presidential debate!

The debate will take place in Florida on Thursday, September 22, and will be broadcast live on Fox News at 9 PM EDT.

This is a huge victory for liberty over the establishment. Governor Johnson will share the stage with eight other candidates and you can bet that he will bring ideas and approaches to the challenges we face that would otherwise not be heard.

A balanced budget in 2013, an end to unnecessary foreign wars, and a gubernatorial track record that truly sets Gary Johnson apart.

How will those other Governors be able to compete?

I also wanted to mention that there has been a significant burst in activity during the last 12 hours as a result of Governor Johnson’s inclusion in the debate.

Prominent articles have appeared in The New York Times, ABC News, Reason, The Daily Beast, CBS News, Huffington Post, American Spectator, The Independent, Yahoo News, The Miami Herald, and countless others.

More importantly, we’ve seen a surge in web traffic commensurate with this explosion in press coverage, and this will likely continue during the next few days.

Re: Fred Karger Qualifies for Fox News Orlando, FL Debate - Cites Two New Polls

Gentlemen:

Great news!  I have now achieved an average of 1% in seven national polls, and I am writing to request my invitation to the Fox News, Republican Party of Florida and YouTube debate on Thursday, September 22, 2011.  Fox News has consistently kept its barrier for debate inclusion low to include many of the presidential candidates who have proven national support by garnering at least one percent in five national polls.

I met that benchmark, having achieved 1% in an average of five national polls before the August 9, 2011 Fox News debate in Ames, Iowa.  However, I was not invited to participate in that debate, even though I met the qualifications, so I filed a 158 page complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), Case #MUR 6493, against Fox News executives Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes.

I asked the FEC to expedite their investigation so that I could be included in this weeks debate, but have not been notified of their findings.  So in the interest of fairness, and with more polling information (see below), I trust that the organizers of Thursdays debate will allow me a spot on that stage.

Since qualifying for the Fox News Iowa debate last month, I have come in at 1% in two more national polls.  On August 26, GFK, the official polling firm of the Associated Press, released a national telephone poll of Republican primary voters that showed me at 1%.  On August 8th, Synovate, which has merged with Ipsos, the official polling partner of Reuters, conducted a Republican primary poll that showed me at 1%.

1% in GFK Poll August 26th

Less than 1% in McClatchy-Marist Poll August 10th

1% in Synovate Poll August 8th

2% in Harris Poll August 4th

1% in Zogby Poll July 25th

1% in Zogby Poll May 23rd

1% Fox News Poll April 28th

The Time Has Come.  Let Fred in the Fox News Republican Primary Debate on September 22, 2011.  I look forward to hearing from you, and hope to see you in Orlando this week.

Best regards,

NumbersUSA to Air TV Ad in FOX Presidential Debate Calling on Candidates to Reduce Legal Immigration, Open Jobs For American

Commercial Questions Government Policy Of Issuing Work Permits To A Million New Legal Immigrants Each Year During Jobs Depression

WASHINGTON, Sept. 21, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- NumbersUSA will air a TV commercial during this Thursday's Republican Presidential debate on FOX News, asking Candidates to reduce legal immigration, if they are elected, so that more jobs are opened up for unemployed American workers.  According to NumbersUSA, despite some of the highest unemployment rates since the Great Depression, Congress and President Obama continue to issue permanent work permits to more than one million new legal immigrants a year to enter the U.S. and take American jobs, despite some of the highest unemployment since the Great Depression.

"None of the candidates, thus far, has been willing to talk about moving illegal foreign workers back to their home countries," commented NumbersUSA President Roy Beck. "Surely, though, some candidates can show enough concern for 20 million Americans who can't find a full-time job that they will promise to reduce the flow of future immigrants so they won't further congest the long hiring lines."

Beck refers to the official "U-6" unemployment rate of the U.S. Labor Department that includes more than 20 million Americans who can't find a job of any kind or who have been forced to take part-time work. The TV commercial highlights the fact that the federal government of these unemployed Americans continues to make it harder to find a job by adding more than one million more legal immigrants each year.

The ad goes on to make the point that the immigration debate should not be about the color of people's skin, their religion or nation of origin, but should be about the number of jobless Americans, the number of available jobs and the number of new immigrants allowed into the U.S. workforce each year.

Separate studies by the Pew Hispanic Center and Northeastern University indicate that new immigrants are landing American jobs while Americans are losing jobs.  The Northeastern University study said that while six million Americans lost jobs over the last two years, one million new immigrants landed jobs.
