"I'm running for President to keep that dream alive."

One of five children, I grew up in the shadow of the stockyards of South Saint Paul, Minnesota.

My father was a truck drive and my mother raised me and my four siblings.  When I was 16 years old she died of ovarian cancer.  Awhile later, my dad lost his job.  In situations like that, you learn some things.

Relying on Faith

At a young age, I learned to rely on my faith in God, in challenging times and at all times.  I saw the importance of having a loving family that ralied around each other in times of crisis.

I learned the value of a job and a paycheck while working at a grocery store as a union member for seven years.  I was proud to earn money to help pay for college and help make ends meet for my family .  My mom always told me a good education was the pathway to my dreams.  She was right.

Married My College Sweetheart

I met my future wife Mary in the library at law school, gradually formed a friendship, soon started dating and fell in love with one another.

Attending church together, faith was intertwined in our courtship.  Twenty-three years later, we still worship at the same church today with our two teenaged daughters.

A Time for Truth

Leadership isn't about fancy speeches and empty promises - we've had three years of that, and it's not working.  Leadership is about telling the truth.

So here it is: Washington is broken, our country is going broke, and our long-term financial outlook will make the pain of the recent recession pale in comparison.

The problems facing our nation are severe.  We can overcome them.  We will grow our economy if we shrink our government.  We will create good jobs if we encourage job creators.  And our children will be free to pursue their dreams if we rescue them from our debts.
