Pawlenty for President

Mailing, 8 1/2" x 11"

From Iowa, mid-2011.
Front and inside, back and flap.

LEADERSHIP is about results, not rhetoric.

"Washington is Broken."

We've tried Barack Obama's way...and his way has failed.  Washington is broken and our country is going broke.  Fluffy promises of hope and change don't buy our groceries, make our mortgage payments, put gas in our cars, or pay for our children's clothes.

"I'm not from Washington, I'm from the Midwest."

The son of a truck driver, I grew up in the shadow of the stockyards of South Saint Paul, Minnesota.  When I was 16 years old my mom passed away from ovarian cancer.  A while later, my dad lost his job.  In situations like that, you learn some things.

I learned to rely on my faith in God, in challenging times and at all times.  I learned the value of hard work, being honest and never giving up on the American Dream.

"These are the Midwestern values I'll bring to the White House."

"To have a bigger economy that produces more jobs,
we need a smaller government that spends less money."

A Fairer Pro-Growth Tax Code
Obama's debt and a planned tax rate increase to 45% is strangling our economy.  We must cut spending and reduce taxes on families and businesses to create good paying jobs for the American people.  We must:

  • - Cut the business tax race (now the second highest in the world) from 35% to 15%.

  • - Make the individual tax code fairer and flatter, reducing rates to 25% and 10%.

  • - Eliminate the death tax, capital gains, interest, and dividends taxes.

Stop the Spending
We need to remind the federal bureaucracy that government exists to serve its citizens, not itself.  We must:

  • - Pass a Balanced Budget Amendment that caps federal spending at 18% of GDP.

  • - Apply Lean Six Sigma to federal agencies to save up to 20% by cutting out inefficient spending.

  • - Oppose increasing the debt limit.

  • - Give the President power to impound up to 5% of federal spending until the budget is balanced.

End Big Bank Bailouts & Corporate Handouts
Barack Obama, Barney Frank and Chris Dodd institutionalized 'too big to fail.'  We simply can't afford to keep bailing out businesses that fail due to their own mismanagement.  We must:

  • - End the Wall Street bailouts and the policy of 'too big to fail.'

  • - Privatize Fannie and Freddie.

  • - Eliminate corporate tax loopholes and subsidies.
Reform Entitlement Programs
Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are going bankrupt.  We must:

  • - Give Medicaid to the states, with block granted funding instead of federal mandates.

  • - Gradually raise the Social Security retirement age for those entering the workforce.

  • - Means test Social Security cost-of-living adjustments for high income people who have not yet retired.

  • - Reform Medicare with pay-for-performance, so we reward healthcare providers for good medical outcomes, not just high volumes.

Repeal ObamaCare
The Washington takeover of healthcare is a top-down, one size fits all bureaucracy.  As Governor, Tim Pawlenty signed an executive order rejecting ObamaCare in Minnesota.  We must:

  • - Repeal ObamaCare.

  • - Make quality and costs more transparent, and incentivize smarter healthcare decisions.

  • - Put people, not the government, in charge of their own healthcare.
