Some of the 85 freshmen Republicans elected in the Nov. 2010 mid-term elections will no doubt be targeted. The states affected by reapportionment could also see interesting races. Ten states are losing seats which could result in incumbents facing each other: OH and NY are losing two seats and IL, IA, LA, MA, MI, MO, NJ and PA one each. TX gains four seats, FL two, and AZ, GA, NV, SC, UT and WA one each.
- Redistricting
- In some states there
is a non-partisan process and in others the legislature plays a key
role in redistricting. Republicans are hoping that their historic gains
of nearly 700 legislative seats on Election Day, November 2010 will
give them an advantage in drawing the new lines (>).
Republicans control both chambers in 25 states and 55 chambers overall,
to 40 for the Democrats, two divided chambers (OR House, AK Senate) and
the unicameral Nebraska.
