Notes: The DNC
announced this ad in a press release titled
"DNC Announces New Television Ad, Video Treatment, Website To Expose
Mitt Romney’s Dishonesty, Inconsistency and Lack of Core Convictions:
Part of Broad Effort to Hold Republican Presidential Candidate
Accountable For His Record of Misleading Voters"
According to the press release:
As
Mitt Romney continues to say or do anything to become
President—including deceiving Americans on his positions on the issues
and in his campaign ads —the Democratic National Committee today is
taking its effort to hold Romney accountable for his words to a new
level with a new television ad entitled “Trapped,” which is running
this week in six markets: Albuquerque, NM; Raleigh-Durham, NC;
Columbus, OH; Pittsburgh, PA; Washington, DC; and Milwaukee, WI on a
mix of broadcast and cable.
The Romney campaign responded with a flood of statements:
“President
Obama has failed to create a single net new job and has wreaked more
havoc on the middle class than any president in modern history. The
last thing the White House wants is to have to run against Mitt Romney
and be held accountable for the many failures of this Administration.
So, instead of focusing on the economy and creating jobs, President
Obama and Democrats are focused on tearing down Mitt Romney.” – Andrea
Saul, Romney Spokesperson
Former
Minnesota Governor and Romney for President National Co-Chair
“President
Obama’s policies have been utter failures for the middle class: he has
failed to create jobs and has burdened future generations with massive
amounts of debt. This Administration does not want to campaign against
Mitt Romney and be forced to defend three years of failure. Instead of
focusing on the middle class and job creation, President Obama and
Democrats are focused on campaigning and trying to tear down Mitt
Romney.”
Former
Wisconsin State Senator and Romney for President Wisconsin State
Co-Chair Ted Kanavas
“President
Obama’s policies have failed to create jobs in Wisconsin and have
devastated the middle class. The last thing that President Obama and
his campaign want to do is run against Mitt Romney and be held
accountable for the economic failures of the last three years. So,
instead of trying to create jobs for the middle class, President Obama
and his campaign have focused on tearing down Mitt Romney.”
Ohio State Senator Mark Wagoner and State Representatives Jay Hottinger
and Cliff Rosenberger
“President
Obama’s policies have failed to bring jobs back to Ohio and have
devastated the middle class. The last thing that President Obama and
his Democratic allies want to do is campaign against Mitt Romney and be
responsible for three years of job losses and rising debt. Instead of
focusing on revitalizing our economy, President Obama and Democrats
only want to focus on tearing down Mitt Romney.”
New Hampshire Senate Majority Leader and Romney
for President supporter Jeb Bradley
“After
three years in office, President Obama has failed to create jobs and
turn around the economy. Instead, his policies continue to cripple the
middle class and pile on staggering amounts of debt. As millions of
Americans look for work, the Obama campaign and Democrats are
attempting to distract attention away from this administration’s dismal
record. The attack they have launched against Mitt Romney shows just
how worried they are about facing him in the general election.”
Former
Florida Senator and Romney for President National Advisory Council
Chairman Mel Martinez
"It
is unsurprising that President Obama and the Democratic Party machine
are relentlessly attacking Mitt Romney. Having failed to turn
around
the economy, they have no choice but to run a negative campaign against
the presidential candidate best equipped to bring them to account for
three years of economic mismanagement that has left millions of
Americans without work.”
Virginia Lieutenant
Governor and Romney for President Virginia Campaign Chairman Bill
Bolling
“With millions of Americans unemployed across the country, it is clear that President Obama’s policies are not working to get our economy back on track. The President has failed to create jobs and has instead proposed job-killing regulations. It is clear from their latest attack that the Obama campaign and Democrats do not want to run against Mitt Romney and be held accountable for three years of failure.”
Former Colorado Congressman Bob Beauprez and Attorney General John
Suthers, both Romney
supporters
“President
Obama’s policies have failed to create jobs in Colorado and across the
country. As millions of Americans remain unemployed, instead of leading
on the economy, President Obama has chosen to focus on campaigning to
save his own job. The latest attack on Mitt Romney
launched by the Obama campaign and Democrats confirms that the last
thing they want to do is run against him in the general election. After
three years, it is time to hold this administration accountable for its
dismal record.”
Former
Iowa GOP Chairman and Mitt Romney supporter
Brian Kennedy
“President
Obama’s policies have failed the middle class. It is clear that this
Administration would rather distract from its failed record and not
talk about the economy. Instead of creating jobs and getting spending
under control, President Obama and his Democratic allies have focused
on attacking Mitt Romney.”
North
Carolina Congressman and Mitt Romney supporter Patrick McHenry
“It
is clear why the Obama campaign does not want to talk about the
economy: President Obama’s policies have been categorical failures. On
jobs and spending, this Administration has not met its promises. And so
instead of trying to create jobs and help the middle class, the Obama
campaign has resorted to trying to tear down Mitt Romney. They would
rather try and distract voters than try to defend three years of
failure.”
New Mexico State Representative Zach Cook
“Simply put, President Obama has failed New Mexico. Unemployment has gone up while the number of jobs have gone down. With a record like that, it’s no wonder he and the Democrat machine has taken to smearing Mitt Romney. They know a campaign based on President Obama’s record of failure is a campaign they will lose.”
Lt.
Governor and Romney for President Nevada State Co-Chair Brian Krolicki
“President Obama has failed to turn around the economy and bring back jobs to Nevada. Instead of focusing on the economy and job creation, he has left millions of Americans unemployed and our nation mired in debt. The latest attempt by President Obama and Democrats to tear down Mitt Romney shows just how worried they are about running against him. President Obama has had three years. It is time to hold him accountable.”
Former Pennsylvania Congressman Phil English
“President Obama’s policies have failed to create jobs and have only further burdened the middle class. The President remains focused on campaigning and tearing down Mitt Romney in order to save his own job instead of working to create jobs for millions of unemployed Americans. It is clear that the last thing President Obama and Democrats want is to run against Mitt Romney and be held accountable for three years of failure.”
DNC communications director Brad Woodhouse responded to the responses:
Between the DNC’s
ad and video on Mitt Romney’s dishonesty and lack of
convictions on the issues which we released today, we outlined
11 politically calculating flip-flops. They managed to respond to
how many?
1. Even the Romney campaign knows it can’t erase the
fact that in the pursuit of whatever office Mitt Romney has been
running for he has simply said whatever he thought would get him
elected at the time.
Mitt Romney is an
untrustworthy, shape shifting, politically calculating politician who
will say anything to get elected and doesn’t actually believe in
anything. On the issues Americans care about – you can’t trust
Romney
any farther than you could throw him – and the Romney campaign’s
response, or lack thereof, shows just how well aware they are of that
fact.
