The FAMiLY LEADER UNVEILS PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE PLEDGE DOCUMENT

Signing of the Pledge Required for Endorsement by The FAMiLY LEADER

Pleasant Hill, IA – The FAMiLY LEADER unveiled a candidate pledge document this morning at a press conference on the West steps of the Iowa State Capitol.  The candidate pledge is titled “The Marriage Vow – A Declaration of Dependence Upon Marriage and FAMiLY”.

The purpose of The Marriage Vow is to have on record the personal convictions of each presidential candidate as it relates to the issue of marriage.  The signing of the pledge will be a requirement for future endorsement by The FAMiLY LEADER.

Presidential candidates who sign The Marriage Vow will sign off on support of personal fidelity to his/her spouse, appointing faithful constitutionalists as judges, opposition to any redefinition of marriage, and prompt reform of uneconomic and anti-marriage aspects of welfare policy, tax policy, and divorce law.  The Marriage Vow also outlines support for the legal advocacy for the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), humane efforts to protect women and children, rejection of anti-women Sharia Islam, safeguards for all married and unmarried U.S. military personnel, and commitment to downsizing government and the burden upon American families.

Bob Vander Plaats, President & CEO of The FAMiLY LEADER, said, “We are intentional about the opportunity to take another step in fulfilling our mission to ‘Strengthen Families' by providing The Marriage Vow to presidential candidates.  The FAMiLY LEADER views this pledge as an important component needed to inform constituents about the personal stand that each presidential candidate takes regarding marriage.  We believe that the candidates’ positions on core values, such as marriage, correlate directly to his/her moral stances on energy issues, sound budgeting policies, national defense, and economic policies.”

The FAMiLY LEADER is a Christian conservative organization which provides a consistent, courageous voice in the churches, in the legislature, in the media, in the courtroom, in the public square…always standing for God’s truth in order to strengthen the family.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  Friday, July 8, 2011

TWO PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES SIGN The FAMiLY LEADER’S MARRIAGE VOW
Candidates Rick Santorum and Michele Bachmann Commit to The Marriage Vow

Pleasant Hill, IA – The FAMiLY LEADER unveiled a candidate pledge document yesterday at a press conference on the West steps of the Iowa State Capitol.  The document is titled “The Marriage Vow – A Declaration of Dependence Upon Marriage and Family”.

The purpose of The Marriage Vow is to have on record the personal convictions of each presidential candidate as it relates to the issue of marriage.  The signing of the pledge will be a requirement for future endorsement by The FAMiLY LEADER.

We are pleased to announce that former Senator Rick Santorum was the first candidate to contact us and commit to signing the pledge.  Out of respect for The FAMiLY LEADER’s widespread media coverage yesterday, Senator Santorum will announce his signing of the actual pledge today.  Within two hours of Santorum’s call, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann also contacted The FAMiLY LEADER and by late afternoon was the first candidate to send her signed Marriage Vow to The FAMiLY LEADER.

Bob Vander Plaats, President & CEO of The FAMiLY LEADER, said, “We are thrilled that within 4 hours of its release, already two candidates have committed to The Marriage Vow and expect others to follow.  Our goal is to send out The Marriage Vow to the candidates, including President Obama, by July 15th and have his/her signed document returned to us by August 1st.  We can then publicize their responses at the Iowa State Fair and the Iowa Straw Poll.”

PRESS RELEASE from Log Cabin Republicans

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 8, 2011
Contact: Christian Berle

Michelle Bachmann's Pledge is Big Government At Its Worst

(Washington, DC) - Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann's choice to support an anti-freedom candidate pledge imposed by the Iowa group Family Leader demonstrates that she is far outside of the American mainstream.

"On matters of marriage and the family, Michelle Bachmann has the choice to live her life however she sees fit. However, living in a free society means that she has to accord the same freedom to everybody else. The agenda proposed by this pledge is big government at its worst," said R. Clarke Cooper, Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director. "From attacks on first amendment freedoms to demeaning female servicemembers to insidious slurs against gay and lesbian families, the Family Leader pledge is fundamentally anti-American and should be ignored by any serious presidential contender. Our nation is confronting serious issues at home and abroad. The last thing we need is Michelle Bachmann or any other politician dictating how we live our lives."

PRESS RELEASE from Gary Johnson 2012

GARY JOHNSON CALLS FAMILY LEADER PLEDGE  "OFFENSIVE AND UNREPUBLICAN"

July 9, 2011, Las Vegas, Nevada – Presidential candidate and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson stated today in a formal statement through his campaign that the Family Leader “pledge” Republican candidates for President are being asked to sign is "offensive to the principles of liberty and freedom on which this country was founded".  Governor Johnson also plans to further state his position against the Family Leader pledge this afternoon in Las Vegas, NV at a speech he will deliver at the Conservative Leadership Conference.

Johnson went on to state that “the so-called ‘Marriage Vow” pledge that FAMILY LEADER is asking Republican candidates for President to sign attacks minority segments of our population and attempts to prevent and eliminate personal freedom.   This type of rhetoric is what gives Republicans a bad name.

"Government should not be involved in the bedrooms of consenting adults. I have always been a strong advocate of liberty and freedom from unnecessary government intervention into our lives. The freedoms that our forefathers fought for in this country are sacred and must be preserved. The Republican Party cannot be sidetracked into discussing these morally judgmental issues -- such a discussion is simply wrongheaded. We need to maintain our position as the party of efficient government management and the watchdogs of the "public's pocket book".

“This ‘pledge’ is nothing short of a promise to discriminate against everyone who makes a personal choice that doesn’t fit into a particular definition of ‘virtue’.

While the Family Leader pledge covers just about every other so-called virtue they can think of, the one that is conspicuously missing is tolerance. In one concise document, they manage to condemn gays, single parents, single individuals, divorcees, Muslims, gays in the military, unmarried couples, women who choose to have abortions, and everyone else who doesn’t fit in a Norman Rockwell painting.

The Republican Party cannot afford to have a Presidential candidate who condones intolerance, bigotry and the denial of liberty to the citizens of this country. If we nominate such a candidate, we will never capture the White House in 2012. If candidates who sign this pledge somehow think they are scoring some points with some core constituency of the Republican Party, they are doing so at the peril of writing off the vast majority of Americans who want no part of this ‘pledge’ and its offensive language.

"Mitt Romney strongly supports traditional marriage but he felt this pledge contained references and provisions that were undignified and inappropriate for a presidential campaign."

PRESS RELEASE from Pawlenty for President

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Gov. Tim Pawlenty's Statement on the Family Leader's Marriage Vow Pledge

"Mary and I have been married for almost 24 years and have been blessed with two wonderful daughters.  In all we do, we remain committed to our core values that are set out in scripture.  We are saved by grace.  As Christians we are to speak the truth, but to do so with love.

"Voters have a right to know about their leaders' faith and values, and how those beliefs may shape their decisions. To that end, today my campaign released a new video in which both Mary and I speak directly and openly about our faith.  I fully support traditional marriage.  Unequivocally.  The traditional family faces enormous challenges in America, and if elected I would vigorously oppose any effort to redefine marriage as anything other than between one man and one woman.

"I deeply respect, and share, Bob Vander Platts' commitment to promoting the sanctity of marriage, a culture of life, and the core principles of the Family Leader’s Marriage Vow Pledge. However, rather than sign onto the words chosen by others, I prefer to choose my own words, especially seeking to show compassion to those who are in broken families through no fault of their own.

"I respectfully decline to sign the pledge."

STATEMENT from Friends of Herman Cain

Statement from Herman Cain

"I stand firmly with the FAMiLY Leader and share their vision and commitment to supporting traditional values in American society.  I am, and will continue to be, an ardent defender of traditional marriage and will work to preserve and protect the sanctity of human life, which I believe begins at conception.  While I commend their intent regarding the pledge, I believe my stated position encompasses their values without the need to sign the pledge."

THE MARRIAGE VOW
A Declaration of Dependence upon MARRIAGE and FAMiLY1

Faithful monogamy is at the very heart of a designed and purposeful order – as conveyed by Jewish and Christian Scripture, by Classical Philosophers, by Natural Law, and by the American Founders – upon which our concepts of Creator-endowed human rights, racial justice and gender equality all depend.2

Enduring marital fidelity between one man and one woman protects innocent children, vulnerable women, the rights of fathers, the stability of families, and the liberties of all American citizens under our republican form of government. Our exceptional and free society simply cannot endure without the transmission of personal virtue, from one generation to the next, by means of nurturing, nuclear families comprised of sexually-faithful husbands and wives, fathers and mothers. We acknowledge and regret the widespread hypocrisy of many who defend marriage yet turn a blind eye toward the epidemic of infidelity and the anemic condition of marriages in their own communities. Unmistakably, the Institution of Marriage in America is in great crisis:
The Candidate Vow:

Therefore, in any elected or appointed capacity by which I may have the honor of serving our fellow citizens in these United States, I the undersigned do hereby solemnly vow* to honor and to cherish, to defend and to uphold, the Institution of Marriage as only between one man and one woman. I vow* to do so through my:

The Vow of Civic, Religious, Lay, Business, and Social Leaders:

We the undersigned do hereby solemnly vow* that no U.S. Presidential primary candidate – nor any primary candidate for the U. S. House, Senate, Governor, state or municipal office – will, in his or her public capacity, benefit from any substantial form of aid, support, endorsement, contribution, independent expenditure, or affirmation from any of us without first affirming this Marriage Vow. Furthermore, to uphold and advance the natural Institution of Marriage, we ourselves also hereby vow* our own fidelity to this Declaration and especially, to our spouses.

So help us God.

* NOTE: Or, “solemnly attest”. Each signatory signs only in his or her individual capacity as an American citizen and current or potential leader; affiliations herein are for identification purposes only and do not necessarily imply formal embrace of this vow or the sentiments herein by any institution or organization.

Ed. Note:  A controversy arose over the first point ("Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African- American baby born after the election of the USA's first African-American President.3") and it was removed within a couple of days.

Fast forward five months...  Newt Gingrich was reportedly still being considered for endorsement and he provided a written response to The FAMiLY LEADER...

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich Provides Written Response to The FAMiLY LEADER’s Marriage Pledge

Pleasant Hill, IOWA. – Former Speaker and presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has provided The FAMiLY LEADER his written response to The Marriage Vow – A Declaration of Dependence Upon Marriage and Family.  To date, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, Governor Rick Perry, and former Senator Rick Santorum have all signed the marriage pledge.  The 14-point pledge can be found here: http://www.thefamilyleader.com/the-marriage-vow.

Speaker Newt Gingrich’s response:
________________________________________________________

To Bob Vander Plaats and the Executive Board of The FAMiLY LEADER:

I appreciate the opportunity to affirm my strong support of the mission of the FAMiLY LEADER by solemnly vowing to defend and strengthen the family through the following actions I would take as President of the United States.

Defending Marriage.  As President, I will vigorously enforce the Defense of Marriage Act, which was enacted under my leadership as Speaker of the House, and ensure compliance with its provisions, especially in the military.  I will also aggressively defend the constitutionality of DOMA in federal and state courts.  I will support sending a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the states for ratification.  I will also oppose any judicial, bureaucratic, or legislative effort to define marriage in any manner other than as between one man and one woman.  I will support all efforts to reform promptly any uneconomic or anti-marriage aspects of welfare and tax policy.  I also pledge to uphold the institution of marriage through personal fidelity to my spouse and respect for the marital bonds of others.

Defending the Unborn.  I believe that life begins at conception.  On day one of my administration, I will sign an executive order reinstating Ronald Reagan’s Mexico City policy that prevents taxpayer dollars from being used to fund abortions overseas.  I will also work with Congress to repeal Obamacare, defund Planned Parenthood so that no taxpayer dollars are being used to fund abortions but rather transfer the money so it is used to promote adoption and other pro-family policies, and enact legislation that provides greater protections for the unborn.

Defending Religious Liberty.  As President, I will vigorously defend the First Amendment’s rights of religious liberty and freedom of speech against anyone who would try to stifle the free expression of believers.  I will also promote legislation that protects the right to conscience for healthcare workers so they are not compelled to perform abortions and other procedures that violate their religious teachings.

Defending Against Debt.  As President, I will undertake vigorous policies to maximize capital investment and job creation, along with common sense entitlement reforms, to dramatically turn around the nation’s fiscal situation.  Building upon the same principles I championed during my four years as Speaker, when we reduced the national debt by over $400 billion and dramatically reduced the national debt as a percentage of the GDP, we will reduce the enormous burden upon American families of the public debt and unfunded liabilities.

Defending the Right of the People to Rule Themselves.  Today, as federal courts have intervened in sectors of American life never before imaginable, including the intervention in the definition of marriage as well as when unborn life can be protected under the Constitution, the public has increasingly come to view them as an usurpative device for unelected rulers.  This abuse of power and loss of public confidence amounts to a constitutional crisis.  I believe the executive and legislative branches each have an independent responsibility to interpret the Constitution, and in those rare circumstances when they believe the federal courts, including the Supreme Court, have engaged in a serious constitutional error, they can choose among an array of constitutional powers to check and balance the courts.  As President, I will nominate for federal judgeships, including justices of the Supreme Court, only those individuals who are committed to an originalist understanding of the Constitution.  Judges with an originalist understanding will subordinate themselves to the meaning of the Constitution as it was intended by the framers, and not substitute their own judgments about its meaning.  The inherent judicial self-restraint that comes from an originalist approach to the Constitution offers the best long-term assurance that federal judges will not exceed their powers and trample on individual liberties.  I will also work with Congress to use the Constitutional means available to reassert the right of the elected branches of government to defend their understanding of the meaning of the Constitution, including limiting the jurisdiction of the federal courts to decide on certain issues, when they believe the federal courts have engaged in a serious constitutional error.

Sincerely,

Newt Gingrich
