Romney’s Latest Failed Attempt to Shift from His Anti-Choice Agenda

Washington, D.C. – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, issued the following statement in response to media reports that Governor Romney told the Des Moines Register editorial board today that “there is no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda.”

“Today’s conflicting statement by Mitt Romney reminds voters why we cannot trust him to lead our country,” Keenan said. “Romney has repeatedly supported overturning Roe v. Wade and would appoint Supreme Court Justices who share his anti-choice views. If that wasn’t enough, Romney chose Congressman Paul Ryan, someone who co-sponsored and repeatedly voted for the Federal Abortion Ban, as his running mate for President. The question Governor Romney must answer for the American people is, what part of his anti-choice agenda is he not familiar with?”

A look at Romney’s campaign agenda since he has been running for President reinforces his anti-choice position:

Keenan said Romney’s attempt to shift from his anti-choice position only adds to the credibility gap he faces with voters. NARAL Pro-Choice America will engage its over one-million member activists to remind voters of Romney’s true anti-choice agenda.

In addition, NARAL Pro-Choice America recently released findings from a survey in key battleground states that shows that a key block of women voters is resistant to a candidate with extreme anti-choice views.
