Presidential Candidates Pledge to Advance Pro-life Issues In Office
2012 Hopefuls Sign Pro-Life Leadership Presidential Pledge

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) today announced the Republican candidates for President who have signed its Pro-Life Leadership Presidential Pledge, committing them to actively advance pro-life policies and legislation if they are elected to the White House.  Signers of the pledge include Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty and Rick Santorum.  Marilyn Musgrave, former Congresswoman and Project Director for SBA List, made the announcement at the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans this afternoon. SBA List is also calling on pro-life activists to put pressure on those candidates who have refused to sign, Mitt Romney, Herman Cain, and Gary Johnson, to sign the pledge.

“We applaud those candidates who did sign the pledge for vowing to support and advance the protection of life at all stages if elected to the White House,” said Musgrave.  “Their signatures demonstrate that mere lip-service to protecting women and the unborn is not enough—it must be backed up by concrete action.”

According to the pledge, available here, if elected President, candidates will:

“The conviction and resolve of these candidate’s answers grassroots hunger for authentic leadership.  Any ‘truce’ on social issues is not viable, nor is it acceptable to the grassroots,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser.  “As one of the most activist presidents on abortion in history protects political allies like Planned Parenthood and continually appoints activist federal judges, the situation demands a strong leader who will advance consensus and life affirming legislation and policy at all levels.”

The Susan B. Anthony List spent $11 million during the 2010 midterm election cycle. Overall, the SBA List was involved in 90 races including 62 wins and 28 losses. Successes included: defeating 15 of 20 so-called "pro-life" Democrats who voted for abortion funding in the health care reform bill; increasing the number of pro-life women in the House by 70 percent; filling the void of pro-life women in the U.S. Senate and increasing the number of pro-life women governors from one to four.

Romney Refusal to Sign Pro-life Pledge Leaves More Questions than Answers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) today questioned Governor Mitt Romney on his explanation for refusing to sign its Pro-Life Presidential Leadership Pledge. Signers of the pledge include Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty and Rick Santorum, committing them to actively advance pro-life policies and legislation if they are elected to the White House. In addition to Mitt Romney, Herman Cain and Gary Johnson have refused to sign.

“Our next president must recognize the urgency of addressing over a million abortions per year,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “That’s why our pledge calls for active leadership, not just checking the box. Five candidates took the pledge, and the pro-life grassroots know where they stand.

“Governor Romney refused to take the pledge and his explanation raises more questions than answers. In good conscience, we cannot let this rest.

“He seems to indicate that he wants the freedom to nominate pro-abortion candidates for key cabinet positions such as Attorney General or Secretary of Health and Human Services. This is precisely what we want to rule out and it is unacceptable.

“He chooses to identify non-existent legislation that would defund hospitals as a reason not to sign. Defunding hospitals has never been considered by Congress, is not part of public debate, and is not part of the pledge. 95 percent of abortions are performed outside of hospitals. Instead, we outlined existing pieces of pro-life legislation that address taxpayer funding of abortion. We would like to know where he stands on each measure.

“States across the country are passing the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act which provides protection for unborn babies capable of feeling pain. The grassroots need to know if Governor Romney would advance and sign a federal version into law.”

According to the pledge, available here, if elected President, candidates will:

BLOG POSTING from Romney for President

My Pro-Life Pledge

I am pro-life and believe that abortion should be limited to only instances of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother.

I support the reversal of Roe v. Wade, because it is bad law and bad medicine. Roe was a misguided ruling that was a result of a small group of activist federal judges legislating from the bench.

I support the Hyde Amendment, which broadly bars the use of federal funds for abortions. And as president, I will support efforts to prohibit federal funding for any organization like Planned Parenthood, which primarily performs abortions or offers abortion-related services.

I will reinstate the Mexico City Policy to ensure that non-governmental organizations that receive funding from America refrain from performing or promoting abortion services, as a method of family planning, in other countries. This includes ending American funding for any United Nations or other foreign assistance program that promotes or performs abortions on women around the world.

I will advocate for and support a Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act to protect unborn children who are capable of feeling pain from abortion.

And perhaps most importantly, I will only appoint judges who adhere to the Constitution and the laws as they are written, not as they want them to be written.

As much as I share the goals of the Susan B. Anthony List, its well-meaning pledge is overly broad and would have unintended consequences. That is why I could not sign it. It is one thing to end federal funding for an organization like Planned Parenthood; it is entirely another to end all federal funding for thousands of hospitals across America. That is precisely what the pledge would demand and require of a president who signed it.

The pledge also unduly burdens a president’s ability to appoint the most qualified individuals to a broad array of key positions in the federal government. I would expect every one of my appointees to carry out my policies on abortion and every other issue, irrespective of their personal views.

If I have the opportunity to serve as our nation’s next president, I commit to doing everything in my power to cultivate, promote, and support a culture of life in America.

Herman Cain Reaffirms Commitment to Pro-Life Principles

(Stockbridge, GA)- Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain reaffirmed his commitment to his longstanding pro-life principles saying:

"I support right-to-life issues unequivocally and I adamantly support the first three aspects of the Susan B. Anthony pledge involving appointing pro-life judges, choosing pro-life cabinet members, and ending taxpayer-funded abortions.

However, the fourth requirement demands that I 'advance' the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. As president, I would sign it, but Congress must advance the legislation.

I have been a consistent and unwavering champion of pro life issues.

In no way does this singular instance of clarification denote an abandonment of the pro-life movement, but instead, is a testament to my respect for the balance of power and the role of the presidency."

PRESS RELEASE from Rick Santorum for President

Santorum Stunned by Romney's Refusal to Sign

Susan B. Anthony List's Pro-Life Pledge

New Orleans, LA - Former Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) issued the following statement in reaction to the announcement by the Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) regarding Governor Mitt Romney's refusal to sign the Pro-Life Leadership Pledge.

"This past Monday night at the Republican Presidential Debate, I was asked about Governor Romney's pro-life conversion, and I gave him the benefit of the doubt.  I apparently spoke too soon.  It is incredibly disappointing that Governor Romney chose not to defend those who cannot defend themselves," said Senator Santorum.

During his time in the Senate, Senator Santorum proudly stood in the forefront of the nation's pro-life battles - from authoring the ban on partial-birth abortions to the "Born Alive Infant Protection Act," and "Unborn Victims of Violence Act," which is more commonly known as "Laci and Connor's Law."  Senator Santorum also led the fight on the floor of the United States Senate in support of strict constructionist judges against the unwarranted and unprecedented filibusters by the then-Democratic minority.

Additional announced candidates who did not take the pledge include Herman Cain and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson.

Bachmann Signs Pro-Life Pledge; Urges Romney to Do the Same

Washington, DC - On the heels of Congresswoman Michele Bachmann signing the Susan B. Anthony (SBA) List Pro-Life Presidential Leadership Pledge, Bachmann for President Spokeswoman Alice Stewart issued the following statement in response to Governor Romney's failure to sign the Pledge and defend life:

"Congresswoman Michele Bachmann was proud to sign the SBA List Pro-Life Presidential Leadership Pledge. Protection of the unborn has never been a political issue for her. It is, quite simply, a core conviction from which she has not wavered.

"It is distressing that Governor Romney refuses to sign the SBA Pledge, even while claiming to be pro-life. The excuses for not signing clearly continue the doubts about his leadership and commitment to ending the practice of abortion – particularly for a candidate who ran as pro-choice for the Senate and Governorship of Massachusetts. Any Presidential candidate seeking our party's nomination should sign the SBA Pledge and vow to protect life from conception to natural death. Governor Romney should reconsider his decision not to sign the Pledge just as he reconsidered his position on the life issue during the last campaign.

"Congresswoman Bachmann will nominate federal judges who are deeply committed to the Constitution and who will not legislate from the bench. She will also work to defund Planned Parenthood, end taxpayer funding of abortions, and repeal Obamacare and its open door for spending taxpayer dollars for abortion services."

McCotter Signs Pro-Life Pledge

LIVONIA, MI – Republican Presidential candidate Thaddeus McCotter signed the Susan B. Anthony List “Pro-Life Leadership Pledge,” once again confirming his long-standing commitment to affirming and defending the right to life.

“If you are a principled conservative, signing such a pledge requires not the courage of your convictions, but simply convictions. Unlike some others in this race, I have consistently acted to respect the sanctity and dignity of the unborn child,” said McCotter.

McCotter as a sitting U.S. Congressman has a 100 percent National Right to Life voting record since joining Congress.  McCotter added:

“A President and Administration that does not respect the most basic, precious, foundation of our country, life itself, cannot be expected to understand the pain of millions of Americans who cannot find work, maximally provide for themselves and their families, and fully experience the dignity of self-reliance. This is yet another reason the absence of national leadership endangers the American dream.

“Further, a President who will not support life and defend the most vulnerable among us, is a President who cannot stand up to such inhumane regimes as communist China that believe one’s right to life may be terminated with state sanction.

“We must be a nation where all branches of government recognize that our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are from God, not the government that was instituted to defend them. As President, I will steadfastly continue to affirm and defend the right to life, and strive for an America that preserves and promotes human life, liberty and dignity at home and abroad.”

Cain’s View on Abortion Policy

Thursday, October 20, 2011

“Yesterday in an interview with Piers Morgan on CNN, I was asked questions about abortion policy and the role of the President.

I understood the thrust of the question to ask whether that I, as president, would simply “order” people to not seek an abortion.

My answer was focused on the role of the President. The President has no constitutional authority to order any such action by anyone. That was the point I was trying to convey.

As to my political policy view on abortion, I am 100% pro-life. End of story.

I will appoint judges who understand the original intent of the Constitution. Judges who are committed to the rule of law know that the Constitution contains no right to take the life of unborn children.

I will oppose government funding of abortion. I will veto any legislation that contains funds for Planned Parenthood. I will do everything that a President can do, consistent with his constitutional role, to advance the culture of life. “

Cain’s Confusion Unsettling to Pro-Life Voters Who Want Strong Presidential Leadership
Grassroots to Contact Campaign Urging Him to Sign SBA List Pledge That Will Clarify

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) today questioned presidential candidate Herman Cain’s commitment to pursue pro-life policies while in office after he made confusing and seemingly contradictory remarks to the media.  They encouraged their more than 330,000 members to contact his campaign and urge him to sign the organization’s Pro-Life Presidential Leadership Pledge in order to clarify his position.  He would be the eighth candidate to do so (two signers have since dropped out).

“A candidate’s view of women and the unborn must be crystal clear to the pro-life voter, and Herman Cain’s confusing and fluid position on pro-life policy is unsettling,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the SBA List.  “When the lives of millions of the unborn are at stake, what a presidential candidate would do to advance pro-life priorities must be stated clearly and unequivocally.

“Mr. Cain’s signature on our pledge would remove any doubts about his pro-life commitments as president.”

In recent interviews, Cain says that he’s pro-life from the moment of conception, but also says government shouldn’t make decisions on any exceptions.  He has also remarked:

“I can have an opinion on an issue without it being a directive on the nation. The government shouldn’t be trying to tell people everything to do, especially when it comes to a social decision that they need to make.”

“On the contrary,” said Dannenfelser, “the government must absolutely step in when lives are at stake; they cannot leave it to the ‘social decisions’ of others.  We don’t doubt Mr. Cain is 100 percent personally pro-life as he says, but he has not been clear to the public on how this translates into public policy, and that doesn’t sit well with pro-life voters.”

Earlier this year, Herman Cain took issue with the fourth point of the pledge which commits candidates to advance and sign into law a Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act to protect unborn children who are capable of feeling pain from abortion. Cain said that he’d be willing to sign a fetal pain bill into law but wouldn’t use the weight of the presidency to advance it.  The SBA List expects that a president who is committed to the protection of unborn lives would use the weight of that office to advance life-saving legislation in Congress.

The Susan B. Anthony List is a nationwide network of more than 330,000 Americans dedicated to mobilizing, advancing, and representing pro-life women in politics.  Its connected Candidate Fund increases the percentage of pro-life women in the political process.
