Notes:
-Dates above are issue dates which are often several days to several weeks later than when the magazine actually comes out.
-Inspired by the Steven Spielberg movie "Lincoln" starring Daniel Day-Lewis both Time ("What Would Lincoln Do?" Nov. 5, 2012 issue) and Newsweek ("The Great Campaigner," Oct. 22, 2012 issue) featured President Abraham Lincoln on the cover in the closing weeks of the campaign.
-Maclean's, the Canadian newsmagazine, put Romney on the cover of its Sept. 3, 2012 issue with a pull-no-punches subhead "How this gaffe-prone, flip-flopping, mega-rich elitist could still beat Obama" (cover photo by Andrew Tolson)
-The story behind The Atlantic's Sept. 2012 cover is rather amazing. Although the image looks like a painting it is actually a photo. Luke Hayman, a partner at the design firm Pentagram, described how it came about in an Aug. 22 article on The Atlantic's website. They found stand-ins for Romney and Obama, spent a full day in the gym, and British photographer Alison Jackson shot about 15,000 frames. (see: "Slugfest 2012: The Making of The Atlantic's September Cover.")
-Bloomberg Businessweek considered but did not run on its 01/16/12 issue a cover that showed a bruised and bloodied image of Romney. The magazine instead went with a cover photo of Microsoft's Steve Ballmer. Interestingly New York magazine did go with a somewhat similar image featuring Romney, Gingrich and Obama on its 01/30/12 issue. BuzzFeed and The Atlantic Wire reprinted this statement from Bloomberg Businessweek editor Josh Tyrangiel:
Each week we design a few cover possibilities for the upcoming issue. We see where the news is going and make a final decision about the image on Wednesday afternoon. Two weeks ago (January 16 issue, on stands January 13) we had two great pieces in the magazine: Ashlee Vance's profile of Steve Ballmer and his efforts to reboot Microsoft, and Peter Coy's Opening Remarks about how the GOP had turned on Mitt Romney and Private Equity. In the end, we went with Ballmer since the Romney story seemed to have already hit its peak. A lot of times these decisions are about all of us putting our finger in the air and trying to figure out which way the zeitgeist is blowing. It's what makes the job so fun and so challenging.
-The Sept. 23, 2011 issue of The Week, (mid-September), and the Oct. 3, 2011 issue of Newsweek (latter part of September) show how even months before the first votes were cast the race for the GOP nomination, the conventional wisdom media view had already narrowed the race down to Perry vs. Romney.
-Newsweek's 8/15/11 cover of Bachmann featuring a photo by Chris Buck created a bit of a stir. The Daily Show's Jon Stewart did a riff on the cover. "Be honest Newsweek. You used that photo in a petty attempt to make Michele Bachmann look crazy," Stewart said. "And that's what her words are for." Newsweek editor-in-chief Tina Brown said in a statement, “Michele Bachmann’s intensity is galvanizing voters in Iowa right now and Newsweek’s cover captures that." Some saw it as an example of "political gender bias in the media" (letter).
-For background and observations on Time's Perry cover see: Feifei Sun. "Platon on Perry: Behind the Scenes of the Cover of TIME." Time Lightbox, Sept. 15, 2011.
-Newsweek's 6/13/11 cover of Romney ("The Morman Moment: How the Outsider Faith Creates Winners") generated some controversy. The cover features Romney's head photoshopped on a poster for "Book of Mormon," the musical. Jim Geraghty writing in National Review online's "The Campaign Spot" put up a posting titled "Newsweek, Portraying Romney as a Dancing Lunatic" in which he described the cover as "appalling."
-Only three solo Ron Paul covers were found. In response to The Week's April 13, 2012 issue "Last man standing" showing a battered Romney, Paul Ryan, and a battered Santorum, Paul supporter TJ Riordan commented, "Do you see Ron Paul in the background with the large crowd around him celebrating freedom and liberty....oh wait that's not in the media, that's only in reality. Ron Paul 2012!"
-The list shows the pre-campaign fascination with Palin, who appeared as a central figure in eight covers in 2009 and 18 in 2010. In addition to those Palin covers on the list, she also appeared, although not as a dominant figure, in The New Republic 10/28/10 issue "The Republicans are Coming!" (illustration by Erik T. Johnson) which is a highly stylized Halloween image with Boehner, O'Donnell, Palin, and several others. She is included in The Week 12/25/09 issue "The faces of 2009" and 01/07/11 issue "The faces of 2010."
