Louisiana Officials Strain and Scalise Endorse Texas Gov. Rick Perry for President

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Texas Gov. Rick Perry today received the endorsements of Louisiana’s Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry Mike Strain and U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) in Perry’s campaign for president of the United States. Gov. Perry visited New Orleans today and spoke to a large crowd of supporters.

”I believe that Rick Perry will lead this country back to economic prosperity and pride,” said Commissioner Strain. “Gov. Perry has proven his effectiveness as a job creator. Since June of 2009, Texas has created roughly 40 percent of the net new jobs in America while President Obama’s policies have led to continued unemployment and economic despair.”

"Rick Perry's proven record of job creation and balancing budgets are exactly the kind of strong leadership our country needs right now. He understands Louisiana's energy-based economy and will fight to get our families working, our economy strong and our nation secure," said Congressman Steve Scalise.

“I am grateful for the support of Commissioner Strain and Congressman Scalise, who understand the importance of job creation and sensible economic policies to get America working again,” said Gov. Perry. “I look forward to working with both of them as I take my campaign to the people of Louisiana and continue to share my plans for getting this country back on track as president of this great country.”

Dr. Mike Strain was elected to serve as Commissioner of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry in 2007 and was sworn into office in January 2008. In 1999 Strain was elected to the office of State Representative in House District 74 with 70 percent of the vote. He ran unopposed to win a second term in 2003. In 1983, Strain earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine from LSU, and along with his wife Dr. Susan Strain, owns the Claiborne Hill Veterinary Hospital in Covington, La.

Congressman Steve Scalise was first elected to Congress in a special election in May of 2008. Scalise was overwhelmingly re-elected in November of 2008 and again in November of 2010 to continue serving Louisiana’s First Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Scalise is known as a staunch conservative who advocates for the principles of fiscal discipline, lower taxes, a comprehensive national energy policy, ethics reform, a strong national defense and traditional family values. As a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, Scalise has already emerged as one of the leaders in Congress in pushing for a strong national energy policy that increases the supply of American oil and natural gas. In Congress, Scalise serves as Deputy Republican Whip and a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Scalise was preceded in Congress by Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal.
