June 1-3, 2009--Less than five
months into the Obama Administration, hundreds of progressives gathered
for what is now known as the America's Future NOW! conference (formerly
Take Back America). According to a press release issued by
organizers, "Progressive groups are coordinating their efforts and
mobilizing independently to fight special interests standing in the way
of President Obama's progressive agenda." America's Future
co-director Robert Borosage told the assembly that progressives have
come a very long way, but the real struggle is just beginning. [excerpt] "We have a president
who gets it," Borosage said. He outlined "big stuff" to be
accomplished, including health care for all, investment in education
from pre-K to college, the Employee Free Choice Act and immigration
reform, but warned that "the passage is not easy."
