Conservatives: Freedom, Not Big Government Is Key >
36th Annual Conservative Political Action Conference, February 26-28, 2009
February 27, 2009--Introducing House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH), Grover Norquist lauded Boehner's success in holding all House Republicans together to vote against  the stimulus bill.  Norquist said the vote was "step one on the road to a majority."  Transcribed excerpts from Boehner's speech,

"I think the stimulus was the opening salvo.  It was supposed to be focused on jobs, jobs, jobs, and it turned into nothing more than spending, spending, and more spending.  But when you put this in the hands of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, it obviously became a gravy train for left-wing pork."

"...we're not going to just be the party of 'No.'  We're just not going to be the party of opposition. We really are going to be the party of better solutions.  We're for better solutions rooted in the enduring conservative principles of freedom and security that have been associated with our party since Lincoln.  New solutions doesn't mean new big government programs.  It means unleashing the power of freedom around our country and in the lives of every single American."

"Well the stimulus, the omnibus, the budget, it's all one big downpayment on a new American socialist experiment.  They're laying the groundwork for everything in these bills.  Expanded welfare, government-run health care, green jobs, the works.  They even want to pay your irresponsible neighbors' mortgage off for them.  All this is being done, though, on the backs of our kids and our grandkids, and all of these bills seek to replace our economic freedom with the whims and mandates of politicians and bureaucrats."

Boehner also put in a plug for his PAC, The Freedom Project, which had a booth in the exhibit hall.
