Over 7,000 Political Scientists Converge on DC  ...3 of 7 >
106th American Political Science Association Meeting,  September 2-5, 2010
September 3, 2010--The Pi Sigma Alpha Lecture featured Charlie Cook, The Cook Political Report, and Stuart Rothenberg, The Rothenberg Political Report, discussing the 2010 mid-term elections.  Before their talks they spoke with University of Buffalo political science professor and Pi Sigma Alpha president James Campbell.
Cook and Rothenberg started their newsletters in the early 1980s and are two of the most respected political analysts today.

Cook compared this cycle to 1994, when "we never saw the magnitude" (Republicans gained 52 House seats).  From 1994 he learned that "all politics is local except when it's not."  Cook said this cycle "looks like its going to be one of the really big ones."  He said there is a "very, very, very, very good chance of the House tipping."  However, he said it would be "an unearned win" for Republicans.

Rothenberg said that no one saw this happening a year ago.  Obama's job approval fell markedly between May and September 2009.  "The public has changed its view of the administration and the economy."  "This election is about Democrats and President Obama," he said.  Rothenberg said Democrats will try to "beat the stuffing out of individual Republicans" and they "have a lot of ammunition, but do the voters care?"
