Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz Elected DNC Chair ...2 of 2 > |
May 4, 2011--Following her
election as DNC chair, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz received the gavel
and outlined her vision for the party [prepared
remarks]. |
One of the highlights of the
meeting was a congratulatory call from
President Obama. There were also several amusing moments.
When those
participating via conference call chimed in at a couple of points, they
sounded like a lilliputian chorus over the speakers. At the close,
the rabbi delivering the benediction drew laughs when he pronounced
himself "an openly Jewish rabbi." At this point, Democrats seem fairly confident about the chances of re-electing President Obama in 2012, while recognizing it will be a tough campaign. They point to an undistiguished Republican field. The killing of Osama bin Laden a few days ago certainly provided a boost to Obama. On the downside are high gas prices, a weak recovery, and concerns over the debt. One DNC member said a major concern is whether Democrats will be able to maintain control of the Senate. |
