CPAC Draws Candidates and Conservative Luminaries  ...8 of 18 >
Feb. 10, 2012--Gov. Bob McDonnell (VA) spoke on the American Dream and said, "We've got a battle to preserve that American Dream from the big government, statist Obama machine that we've seen governing for the last three years."  McDonnell roved about the stage as he talked about his background and his success in Virginia.  He said he had inherited a $2 billion tax increase and $4 billion deficit.  McDonnell said he killed the tax hike and cut spending by $4 billion.  "Guess what?" McDonnell said, "Fiscal conservative principles work; we had $1 billion in surplus the last two years."  He lauded the work of results oriented conservatives.  McDonnell, who is chairman of the RGA, said he has a goal of achieving the largest number of Republican governors in American history.

McDonnell, who endorsed former Gov. Mitt Romney on Jan. 20, is seen as a possible vice presidential choice.  Toward the close of his speech, McDonnell put in a pitch for Romney, stating:

"I'm strongly supporting Mitt Romney for president because I believe he's the results-oriented conservative.  He's the guy, whether it's been as governor of Massachusetts, as head of a large private sector company, and turning around the Olympics—he's the results oriented, can do consistent conservative.  He's been able to get things accomplished, be it cutting $3 billion in deficit in Massachusetts, turning the Olympics around, creating over 100,000 jobs for people.  That's to me the kind of can do, responsible conservative leadership that we need for the United States of America."
