Travels of Former Gov. Mitt Romney—July 2012

Former Gov. Mitt Romney  |  President Barack Obama

Romney started out the month with the annual family vacation at his summer home on Lake Winnipesaukee, Wolfeboro, NH, then returned to the fundraising trail.  Romney did speak at the NAACP Annual Convention on July 11—President Obama opted not to appear, sending the Vice President in his stead—but he received some boos for his trouble (+).  He delivered another high profile speech to the VFW national convention in Reno on July 24 (1, 2), the day after Obama addressed the gathering.  Closing the month Romney did an overseas trip, travelling to London for the opening ceremonies of the Olympics, and to Israel and Poland.  Romney's venture onto the world stage and interactions with foreign leaders offered the opportunity for a boost to his stature.  A bumpy start in London prompted a full-scale media feeding frenzy (+), and there was also some controversy about remarks he made at a fundraiser in Jerusalem.  Nonetheless, the numerous photo sprays with world leaders and images of him visiting locations such as the Western Wall and the Solidarity Monument do help convey the notion of Romney as a world leader.
