Travels of Former Gov. Mitt Romney—May 2012

Former Gov. Mitt Romney  |  President Barack Obama

During the month of May, Mitt Romney consolidated his position as the all-but-certain nominee.  The days when observers doubted whether he would be able to expand his support beyond 25-percent of the Republican electorate seemed distant indeed.  Romney went from being a candidate embroiled in a heated primary battle to a man who could actually be elected president of the United States.

On May 2 in Washington, DC Romney thanked staff at the RNC and met with conservative bloggers; that same day Newt Gingrich announced he was suspending his campaign.  On May 5 Romney met for about 90 minutes with erstwhile rival Rick Santorum.  On May 14 Ron Paul announced he would not actively campaign in upcoming primaries.  Romney's May 23 trip to Washington, DC included meetings with Sen. Minority Leader McConnell and Sen. Rand Paul.  Although there were still primaries throughout the month (IN, NC and WV on May 8, NE and OR on May 15, AR and KY on May 22 and TX on May 29), Romney, in general election mode, largely ignored them.  On May 29 he cruised to a win in the Texas primary, gaining the 1,144 delegates needed for the nomination (+).

A, or the, major focus in May was fundraising.  The campaign does not divulge much about fundraising events, but, reviewing news reports, one finds that throughout the month he attended more than 30 fundraisers, most notably a Florida swing May 16-17 that included at least six fundraising events raising a reported $10 million, a Connecticut/New York swing May 20-22 that was also expected to raise $10 million, a May 29 event with Donald Trump at the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas that raised $2 million, and a California swing that started at the end of the month.

Noteworthy appearances during the month included a commencement address at Liberty University on May 12, an education policy speech delivered to The Latino Coalition on May 23, and a press conference in front of the closed Solyndra headquarters on May 31.
