The District of Columbia served an important role as a border state to battleground Virginia.  Both campaigns benefited from DC volunteers travelling to Virginia, but the Obama campaign seemed particularly well organized.  It reported that, "Over the final 4 weeks of the campaign, DC volunteers made more than 250,000 phone calls into Virginia and knocked on more than 600,000 doors in the state."

DC also provided a convenient location for fundraising events, particularly for the Democratic ticket.  In the Fall, President Obama made several visits to the DNC for what were described as "political meetings."  Additionally candidates addressed meetings that various national associations and groups held in DC.
