2012 U.S. Senate: Sen. Daniel Akaka's retirement created an open seat.  In what was initially expected to be a close race, Rep. Mazie Hirono (D) defeated former Gov. Linda Lingle (R) by 61.6% to 36.8%
Post-election:
On Dec. 17, Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-HI) died; Gov. Abercrombie (D) announced on Dec. 26 his selection of Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz (D) for the position.
U.S. House: Rep. Hirono's run for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate made an open seat in CD2; Honolulu City Councilwoman Tulsi Gabbard (D) held the seat garnering 76.8% of the vote.  In the CD1 rematch, Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (D) defeated former Rep. Charles Djou (R) by 53.5% to 44.4%
