Sept. 18, 2009--Rep. Mike Pence
(R-IN) told
the audience at the Value Voters Summit 2009, "I believe we are on the
brink of a great American awakening,
and it will begin here and begin now and begin with you." [transcript] As chairman of the
House Republican Conference, Pence is the third ranking GOP member in
the House. Responding to reporters after his speech, Pence denied
any plans to run for president. However, his strong fiscal and
social conservative record has attracted interest among
activists. Last week Pence spoke at the 9-12 Taxpayer March on
Washington. In July he visited Iowa, and in 2005-06 he was
subject of several draft movements >.
Pence has represented Indiana's 6th CD (the eastern part of the state
south of Fort Wayne and east of Indianapolis along the Ohio border)
since 2000.
