"Reagan's National Security Advisor Supports Newt for Commander in Chief" +
  2:32 web video from Jan. 21, 2012.

Bud McFarlane (Former National Security Advisor): Hi, I'm Bud McFarlane.  I was President Reagan's national security advisor.  I'm for Newt Gingrich and I'll tell you why.  Newt Gingrich is the only man among all the candidates who have looked hard at the kind of threats we're going to face, and I don't just mean overseas but right here at home.  We're going to face a series of things that are new that involve cybersecurity, terrorism, attacks using possibly biological weapons; we're also going to have an energy problem we're going to have to deal with.  We're going to have to face $200 a barrel oil and I asked myself who among all these have given thought to it and more importantly who has a history of getting things done in Washington.  Only Newt Gingrich has those qualities.

I had the good fortune to work with Newt when I was in the Reagan administration and he was a young congressman at that time helping President Reagan solve our economic problems.  But over the years I could always count on him to be a strong advocate for national defense, and then later on I watched him as he grew to become the Speaker, entirely turned over and brought a Republican Congress back into office and then he was able to work across the aisle and work with President Clinton for the first time and have four years in a row of a balanced budget.  Remember it's the House of Representatives that appropriates all the money and with Newt's leadership we had four years of balanced budget, he reformed the welfare program to put people to work, get them off the dole.

But those two qualities.  Knowledge.  What is the right solution to get our economy back in shape and get Americans back to work.  But also having studied the foreign agenda can understand both the history of other cultures and how to negotiate a better future and safety for our country.  And finally a track record of making Washington work and function.  Newt Gingrich is the only one on the dais and in this race who can get it done.  He deserves our support.  We need him badly.
