Campaign Videos (January 2012)

An fairly complete sampling of videos from January. 

The Gingrich video effort around the South Carolina and Florida primary campaigns merits attention.  In the first part of the month the campaign produced a number of attacks on Romney.  In the latter part of January, for the SC and FL contests, the campaign was extraordinarily prolific, producing several dozen videos including testimonials from officials, prominent individuals, and regular citizens as well as condensed clips from speeches, typically 4-6 minutes long.  (In addition to this voluminous output, the campaign also uploaded many clips from Gingrich's media appearances, not considered here).  A number of the videos were noted in the "Newt's Notes" that the campaign sent out to its email list, but viewership for some of them seemed to be very low.  The Gingrich videos do give a better since of the candidate's ideas than the shorter, more produced, more atmospheric videos put up by the Romney campaign.  For the most part, the Gingrich videos were very workmanlike, functional efforts produced in the heat of the campaign, but none of them really stood out.  In hindsight, the campaign might have tried producing somewhat fewer videos and placing a greater emphasis on more thought out, more produced videos (compare 1, 2).  Some of the speech excerpts could have been more tightly edited and they might have benefited from a "Newt on the Stump" branding graphic to open.  Additionally, a more "outside the box" video or two might have generated more traffic.  However, given limited resources, particularly time, the Gingrich video effort was quite creditable. 

There were other videos of note.  The Obama campaign produced videos tying into the Iowa caucus and the State of the Union address.  The Romney campaign produced at least a dozen videos comprising a mix; most notably videos in advance of each of the four January contests, as well as few attacks on Gingrich and Obama. The Perry campaign produced a pig-themed attack on Santorum and a couple of inspirational videos.  No videos were noted from the Santorum or Paul campaigns.  Americans Elect also produced some videos.
