Front Page Coverage of the First Presidential Debate

Below is a summary of how the first presidential debate was covered on the front pages of twenty of the top U.S. newspapers (according to Burrelles Luce).  The newspapers were viewed the Newseum Today's Front Pages website (+).  The debate was the lead story in all but a couple of the papers, and the headlines show Romney as the winner (seizing the offense, taking the fight to Obama, battering Bam...).  Several papers picked up New York Times, Washington Post or AP articles.  Photos showed the candidates before, during and after the debate.  Five of the twenty papers ran separate shots of the two candidates side by side.  One of the more interesting images is a Michael Reynolds pool photo showing Obama and Romney shaking hands at the end of the debate, the crowd in the background and in the left side of the frame moderator Jim Lehrer just getting out of his chair.  Four papers (Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Washington Post and the Star Tribune) ran this image on page one; however the three national papers cropped Lehrer out and only the Star Tribune ran an uncropped image showing Lehrer in the frame as well.  Indeed Lehrer only appeared in two of the front page images, the other being the New York Times, which ran the most straight documentary type image, a head-on shot of the two candidates at their podiums during the debate.
