Newspaper Endorsements in the 2012 General Election
In the closing month of the campaign, many newspapers make endorsements. Endorsements are often run in the Sunday paper to reach the largest audience. Some papers only endorse in state and local races where they are able to have direct interactions with the candidates and issues, or only ballot measures and not candidates, and this is a growing trend. It is doubtful that many or any voters will be persuaded to vote for a presidential candidate by a newspaper endorsement. However, the cumulative effect of a lot of endorsements can convey a sense of support and momentum, and the campaigns certainly are not shy about trumpeting their endorsements (the Romney campaign seemed to be doing a better job of this than the Obama campaign). From an academic point of view, examining the reasoning used in various papers' endorsements can offer clear insights into the candidates' strengths and weaknesses. Below is a sampling of newspaper endorsements; more lists can be found at Scorecard +, Daily Kos + the Star Tribune + and The American Presidency Project +.

Note that there are two possible dates for a newspaper's
endorsement: the date it is posted on a newspaper's website and the
date it is published.

"...our papers are best served by endorsing in races that have local impact and when we can bring strong local perspective or thought to the choice." CA - Bakersfield Californian (Nov. 2, 2012) + "You're on your own. You've read the newspaper articles, watched the debates, scrutinized the campaigns ads, fact-checked the chain email -- you have done all that stuff, haven't you? -- so by now you've surely made a decision in this, the most expensive (and inescapable) presidential campaign in history." CA - The Modesto Bee (Sept. 15, 2012) + "This year, The Modesto Bee will not offer a recommendation for president. As is clear from the stories we put on the front page and the editorials that appear on this page, our focus is on local and regional news." FL - The Ledger [Lakeland] (Sept. 2, 2012) + "In an effort to prevent a perception of bias in political races, the Editorial Board has decided to end the series of editorials by which it has recommended candidates for election. 'The Ledger Recommends' will continue for ballot issues such as proposed state constitutional amendments, or county or city charter amendments." FL - The Palm Beach Post (Oct. 27, 2012) "The Post is not endorsing in the presidential race. Next week, the Editorial Board will present 'The Case for Obama vs. The Case for Romney.'” More FL - Bradenton Herald, Citrus County Chronicle, Daytona Beach News-Journal, Hernando Today, Northwest Florida Daily News, Panama City News Herald, Sarasota Herald-Tribune, St. Augustine Record, Stuart News - Port St. Lucie News - Vero Beach Press Journal, Tallahassee Democrat. IN - Indianapolis Star (Aug. 19, 2012) editorial "We'll keep it local on candidate endorsements" LA - The Times-Picayune (Oct. 14, 2012) "We will not make an endorsement in the presidential race. However, in the coming weeks Times-Picayune columnists Jarvis DeBerry and James Varney will be debating -- in the newspaper and on NOLA.com -- the pros and cons of President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney." So we endorse neither." OH - Dayton Daily News (Oct. 31, 2012) + "There are two major reasons why we are not endorsing: Most readers don’t want us to tell them how to vote. They’ve asked us to dig into the issues and races and provide all the information they need to make their own decision. Some readers don’t trust our news reporting because they see endorsements as an indication of institutional bias. We want to prove to you that our news coverage is as fair and balanced as possible." OH - The Repository [Canton] (Nov. 4, 2012) + "Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney has convinced us that he has a solid plan that will effectively address the nation’s problems, some of which are at a crisis point." OR - The Oregonian (Aug. 14, 2012) + "The access and close observation that inform our endorsements for state and local offices and Congress do not apply in a national race; our CNN-level view of the presidential race is similar to everyone else's." TN - Knoxville News-Sentinel (Oct. 14, 2012) + "The News Sentinel... has no special access to the candidates, and, in this age of global Internet and 24-hour news, we have no sources of information that every other citizens does not have as well." TN - The Commercial Appeal (Nov. 4, 2012) + "In 2012, The Commercial Appeal has decided to let guest writers Kevin Gallagher and Brad Martin have the final say rather than have the newspaper editorial board recommend one of the presidential candidates." TX - Austin American-Statesman (Nov. 3, 2012) + "...we have no special insight into the presidential election that readers can’t glean from their own attention to the news about the candidates. Their stance on the issues, their backgrounds and their performance on the debates have all been covered at length in the pages of this newspaper and elsewhere, and readers need only add their own values and concerns to the mix to make a decision."
