Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz Elected DNC Chair   ...1 of 2 >
May 4, 2011--Newly elected Democratic National Committee Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-20), "the pride of South Florida," declared that Democrats will not be outworked in 2012.  Although President Barack Obama announced the selection of Wasserman Schultz on April 5, following the resignation of Tim Kaine, the choice had to be approved by a vote of members of the DNC.  The meeting took place at the Fairfax Hotel, with many members participating by conference call.  Wasserman Schultz  was first elected to Congress in 2004 and had served as a DNC vice chair since Jan. 2009.
Donna Brazile has served as interim chair for the past month.
Secretary Alice Germond ascertained that a quorum was present.
Rules Committee co-chair Jim Roosevelt explained the rules, which are essentially the same as those used to elect chairs since Ron Brown in 1989.  (Below) ASDC Chair Ray Buckley, Florida State Rep. Joyce Cusack, College Democrats president Alejandra Salinas (via phone) and one of the DNC Members from Florida delivered nominating speeches.
