South Dakota [+] BALLOT [PDF][State Primary June 5]

Registered Voters: 528,621.
U.S. House: Rep. Kristi Noem (R) defeated Matt Varilek (D) by 57.45% to 42.55%. 
State Legislature: Republicans maintained strong majorities in both chambers.  The House went from 50R, 20D to 53R, 17D and the Senate from 28R, 7D to 30R, 5D.
Ballot Measures: South Dakotans weighed in on seven ballot measures.

Tennessee [+] BALLOT [PDF][State Primary August 2]

Registered Voters:  4,013,242.
U.S. Senate: Sen. Bob Corker (R) easily won re-election, defeating Mark E. Clayton (D) by 64.89% to 30.41% and other candidates getting the remainder.
U.S. House: All nine members were re-elected.  The closest race was in the 4th CD where freshman Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R) survived scandal to defeat insurance agency owner and state Sen. Eric Stewart (D) by 55.71% to 44.29%.
State Legislature: Republicans added to already solid majorities in both chambers; the House went from 65D, 33R, 1O to 70R, 28D, 1O and the Senate from 20R, 13D to 26R, 7D.

Texas [+] BALLOT [PDF][State and Presidential Primary May 29]

Registered Voters: 13,646,226.
U.S. Senate: Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison's retirement created an open seat.  After winning the runoff against Lt. Gov. Dewhurst, former Soliciter General Ted Cruz (R), a Tea Party favorite, defeated former state Rep. Paul Sadler (D) by 56.45% to 40.62%; John Jay Myers (L) 2.06% and David B. Collins (0.85%) also ran.
U.S. House: Texas sent eight new members (5D and 3R) to Washington; the balance went from 23R, 9D to  24R, 12D.  In addition to four new seats, there were a couple of retirements (R.Paul (R) and C.Gonzalez (D)), an incumbent defeated in the primary (S.Reyes (D)) and an incumbent defeated in the general (F.Canseco (R)).
-CD 14 (centered on Galveston), open due to the retirement of Rep. Ron Paul (R), businessman (Weber's Air & Heat) and state Rep. Randy Weber (R) defeated former U.S. Rep. Nick Lampson (D), who lost to Pete Olson in 2008 in the old 22nd CD, by 53.47% to 44.62%.
-CD 18 (El Paso), Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D) lost in the primary.  Former city councilman Beto O'Rourke (D), who heads and internet and softward company, defeated small business owner Barbara Carrasco (R) by 65.41% to 32.92%.
-CD 20 (west San Antonio), open due to the retirement of Rep. Charlie Gonzalez (D), state Rep. Joaquin Castro (D) defeated David Rosa (R), an independent insurance agent, by 63.93% to 33.50%.
-CD 23 (along the border in SW Texas between El Paso and San Antonio) state Rep. Pete Gallego (D) defeated Rep. Francisco "Quico" Canseco (R) by 50.30% to 45.55%.
-CD 25 (in Central Texas) former Sec. of State Roger Williams (R) defeated Elaine Henderson (D), who worked for the Houston airport system, by 58.44% to 37.44% and 4.11% for the LIbertarian.
-CD 33 (new...parts of Tarrant and Dallas counties), state Rep. Marc Veasey (D) defeated Chuck Bradley (R), who is retired, by 72.51% to 25.77%.
-CD 34 (new...Brownsville), attorney Filemon Vela (D) defeatedTea Party activist Jessica Puente Bradshaw (R), who also ran for Congress in 2010, by 61.89% to 36.22%.
-CD 36 (new...in Eastern Texas), former Rep. Steve Stockman (R) defeated Max Martin (D), who founded and runs a children's educational software company, by 70.73% to 26.57%.
State Legislature: Republicans maintained control of both chambers.  All 150 House seats and all 31 Senate seats were up.  The House went from 102R, 48D to 95R, 55D and the Senate stayed at 19R, 12D.  >

State gains four U.S. House seats.  Democrats gain three U.S. House seats, defeating one incumbent.  Republicans gain  one U.S. House seat.

Utah [+] BALLOT [PDF][State Primary June 26]

Registered Voters: 1,283,526.
Governor: Gov. Gary Herbert (R)/Lt. Gov Greg Bell defeated businessman Peter Cooke (D)/Vince Rampton by 68.41% to 27.58%; also running were Kirk Pearson (Const.)/Tim Aalders and Ken Larsen (L)/J. Robert Latham.
U.S. Senate: Sen. Orrin Hatch (R) defeated former Sen. Majority Leader Scott Howell (D) by 65.31% to 29,98% and 3.17% for Shaun McCausland (Const.) with Daniel Geery (Just.) and Bill Barron (I) rounding out the field.
U.S. House: Utah gained one House seat.  In the 2nd CD (Southwestern third of the state), consultant, author and former Air Force pilot Chris Stewart (R) defeated union activist and former state Rep. Jay Seegmiller (D) by 62.17% to 32.47%; also running were engineering professor Joe Andrade (I), Charles Kimball (I) and Jonathan Garrard (Const.).  In the new 4th CD (Salt Lake City), Saratoga Springs Mayor Mia Love (R) attracted national attention in her campaign against perennial target Rep. Jim Matheson (D) but lost by 768 votes, 119,803 (48.84%) to 119,035 (48.53%) and 2.63% to Jim Vein (L).  The balance goes from 2R, 1D to 3R, 1D.
State Legislature: All 75 House seats  and 16 of 29 Senate seats were up. Republicans kept solid majorities in both chambers.  The House went from 58R, 17D to 61R, 14D and Senate 22R, 7D to 24R, 5D. 
Ballot Measures: Utah voters very narrowly approved Constitutional Amendment A on severance taxes, and approved Constitutional Amendment B, exempting military personnel from paying property taxes, by a comfortable margin..

Vermont [+] BALLOT [PDF][State Primary August 28]

Registered Voters: 461,237.
Governor: Gov. Peter Shumlin (D) won a second term defeating Randy Brock (R) by 57.8% to 37.6%; also running were Emily Peyton (I), Chris Ericson (USMJP) and David Eagle.  Martha Abbott (Prog.) won her party's primary but declined the nomination.
U.S. Senate: Sen. Bernie Sanders (I) defeated John MacGovern (R) by 71.0% to 24.9%; also running were Chris Ericson (USMJP), Pete Diamondstone,Peter Moss (P&P) and Laurel LaFramboise (VoteKISS).
U.S. House: Rep. Peter Welch (D) defeated Mark Donka (R) by 71.9% to 23.3%; also running were James (Sam) Desrochers (I) , Jane Newton and Andre LaFramboise (VoteKISS).
State Legislature: Democrats maintained solid majorities in both chambers of the General Assembly.  All 150 House seats and 30 Senate seats were up.  The House went from 94D, 48R, 8P and I to 96D 45R and 9P and I and Senate from 20D, 8R, 2P and I to 22D, 6R and 2P and I.

Virginia [+] BALLOT [PDF][State Primary June 12]

Registered Voters: 4,848,597.
U.S. Senate:
Sen. Jim Webb (D) announced he would not seek re-elect on Feb. 9, 2011 (+).  In one of the highest profile Senate races, former Gov. Tim Kaine (D) defeated former Sen. George Allen (R) by 2,010,067 votes (52.86%) to 1,785,542 (46.96%).
U.S. House: All eleven Members were re-elected and the balance remains at 8R, 3D.  The closest race occurred in the 2nd CD (Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk City, Virginia Beach) where freshman Rep. Scott Rigell (R) defeated Paul O. Hirschbiel, Jr. (D), president of a consulting and investing firm, by 53.75% to 46.09%.  (Obama carried the 2nd CD by a narrow margin).
Ballot Measures: Voters approved two proposed constitutional amendments by very wide margins.

Washington [+] BALLOT [PDF][State Primary August 7]

Registered Voters: 3,904,959.
Governor:
Former Rep. Jay Inslee (D) defeated Attorney General Rob McKenna (R) by 1,582,802 (51.54%) to 1,488,245 (48.46%).  The last Republican governor was John D. Spellman, elected in 1980.
U.S. Senate: In her bid for a third term, Sen. Maria Cantwell (D) defeated state Sen. Michael Baumgartner (R) by 60.45% to 39.55%.
U.S. House: In the 1st CD, a mostly rural district in NW Washington, Rep. Jay Inslee resigned in March to focus on his run for governor.  On Nov. 6 there was a special election to fill the remainder of his term as well as the regular general election.  Suzan DelBene (D), the former Microsoft executive who narrowly lost to Rep. Reichert in 2010 won both elections, defeating Snohomish County Councilman John Koster (R), a former state representative who challenged Inslee in 2010 and also ran in 2000. 
- In the 6th CD (Olympic Peninsula, Tacoma), opened by the retirement of Rep. Norm Dicks (D), State Sen. Derek Kilmer (D) defeated Bill Driscoll (R), a Marine Corps veteran who has worked in the forest products industry, by 59% to 41%. 
-In the new 10th CD, businessman and former House Majority Leader Denny Heck (D), who lost to Jaime Herrera (R) in the 3rd CD race in 2010, defeated Pierce County Councilmember Dick Muri (R), who lost to Adam Smith (D) in the 9th CD race in 2010, by 58.56% to 41.44%.  The delegation balance goes from 4D, 4R and 1v to  6D, 4R.
State Legislature: All 98 House seats and 24 of 49 Senate seats were up.  Democrats kept control of both chambers; the House went from 56D, 42R to 55D, 43R and the Senate from 27D, 22R to 26D, 23R. 
Ballot Measures: Voters decided six ballot measures, including: 
approved Initiative 1185, which would require two-thirds legislative majorities or voter approval for tax increases, by 63.91% to 36.09%;
approved Initiative 1240 on creation of a public charter school system by 50.69% to 49.31%;
approved R-74 (yes | no) to allow same sex marriage by 53.7% to 46.3%; and
approved I-502 (yes | no) to license and regulate marijuana production, by 55.7% to 44.3%.

West Virginia [+] BALLOT [PDF][State and Presidential Primary May 8]

Registered Voters: 1,246,559.
Governor: In a re-match of the Oct. 4, 2011 special election, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin (D) defeated businessman Bill Maloney (R) by 50.49% to 45.65% with 2.53% to Jesse Johnson (MP) and 1.34% to  David Moran (L).
U.S. Senate: In a re-match of the Nov. 2010 special election, Sen. Joe Manchin (D) defeated Greer Industries president and CEO John Raese (R) and Bob Henry Baber (MP) by 60.57% to 36.47% and 2.96%.  (Machin's margin in 2010 was 53.5% to 43.4%).
U.S. House: Reps. David McKinley (R) and Shelley Moore Capito (R) were re-elected by comfortable margins; in the 3rd CD Rick Snuffer (R) pushed Rep. Nick Rahall (D) to 53.98% to 46.02%.
State Legislature: All 100 House seats and 17 Senate seats were up.  Democrats' majorities were trimmed a bit in both chambers, The House went from 65D, 35R to 54D, 46R and the Senate from 28D, 6R to 25D, 9R. 
Ballot Measure: Voters defeated a constitutional amendment to repeal term limits for sheriffs.

Wisconsin [+] BALLOT [PDF][State Primary August 14]

[State Primary August 14]
Registered Voters: 3,515,813.
Governor: In the heated June 5 recall election, Gov. Scott Walker (R) defeated Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett (D) by 1,335,585 votes to 1,164,480 votes (53.08% to 46.28%).
U.S. Senate: In a closely watched race, Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D) defeated former Gov. Tommy Thompson (R) by 51.41% to 45.86%, holding the seat for the Democrats.
U.S. House: The 2nd CD (Madison) was open due to Rep. Baldwin's run for Senate.  Assemblyman Mark Pocan (D) defeated businessman Chad Lee (R) by 67.9% to 31.9%.  Two Republican freshmen fended off Democratic challengers.  In the 7th CD (Northwestern Wisconsin) Rep. Sean Duffy (R) defeated former state Sen. Pat Kreitlow (D) by 56.08% to 43.8%, and in the 8th CD (Green Bay) Rep. Reid Ribble (R) defeated Jamie Wall (D) by 55.95% to 43.97%.
State Legislature: All 99 Assembly seats and 16 of 33 Senate seats were up (even numbered districts). Republicans strengthened their majority in the Assembly from 58R, 38D, 1I, 2v to 60R, 39D, and gained control of the Senate from 17D, 15R, 1v to 18R, 15D.

Wyoming [+] BALLOT [PDF][State Primary August 21]

Registered Voters: 240,438.
U.S. Senate: Sen. John Barrasso (R) faced little difficulty in his bid for re-election, defeating Albany County Commissioner Tim Chesnut (D) and Joel Otto (Wyoming Country Party), who manages a ranch and investments.
U.S. House: Rep. Cynthia Lummis (R) handily defeated Chris Henrichsen (D) of Casper and others.
State Legislature: Republicans kept huge majorities in both chambers.  All 60 House seats and 15 of 30 Senate seats were up.  The House went from 50R, 10D to 52R, 8D and Senate stayed at 26R, 4D. 
Ballot Measures: Voters approved Constitutional Amendment A and B reserving the right to make health care decisions to the citizens of the state of Wyoming and recognizing and preseving the heritage of fishing and hunting.  Amendment C, to expand the authority of district court commissioners, failed.
