Oct. 8, 2011--Former Gov. Mitt
Romney addresses the 2011 Values
Voter Summit, marking his sixth appearance at the annual event.
Romney
opened
his
speech
lambasting
President Obama. He touted his
business experience. ("I spent my career in the private
sector. I’ve met a payroll.
I’ve signed the front as well as the back of
a payroll check. I’ve actually saved
jobs and created jobs. I know what it
takes to get America back to work.") Romney outlined what he
would do to ensure a strong economy and a strong military. He
devoted the closing part of his speech to values, stating, "[T]he
foundation needed for a strong economy
and a strong military is a people of strong values." Perhaps the
most interesting moment of Romney's speech occurred when he spoke out
against the speaker who was to follow him, Bryan J. Fischer of the
American Family Association. Without mentioning Fischer by name,
Romney stated,
"We should
remember that decency and civility are values too.
One of the speakers who will follow me today
has crossed that line, I think.
Poisonous language doesn’t advance our cause.
It’s never softened a single heart nor changed
a single mind." [transcript] |
