Heading into Super Tuesday, 13 states with 426 total delegates had held contests.  However some of those events were non-binding.  All told, according to an RNC summary1, of these 426 delegates, 172 had been awarded to candidates—Romney (118), Gingrich (29), Santorum (17) and Paul (8)—while 229 were unbound and 21 RNC.

On Super Tuesday ten states with 437 delegates (19.1% of the 2,288 total delegates) held contests.  Romney won in Alaska, Idaho, Massachusetts, Ohio, Vermont and Virginia.  Santorum won in North Dakota, Oklahoma and Tennessee.  Gingrich won in his home state of Georgia.

After Super Tuesday, according to an RNC summary
2, states with 863 total delegates had held contests, and 559 had been awarded to candidatesRomney (336), Gingrich (107), Santorum (95) and Paul (21)—while 262 were unbound and 42 RNC.

Romney's Super Tuesday pick-up of 218 delegates more than doubled the 169 delegates won by Gingrich (78) and Santorum (78) and Paul (13).*  However, as the Paul campaign noted, "[V]ery few delegates to the Republican National Convention were decided on Tuesday.  Most will be decided several weeks, or even months, from now at District and State conventions - conventions where our local delegates will have a big say in who goes to Tampa."
